Job overview

Are you a registered clinical or counselling psychologist or a CBT therapist with experience working in an acute hospital environment using CBT/ ACT/ CFT approaches?

We are looking for a Band 7 0.8 wte Clinical/ Counselling psychologist to work in our Sutton hospital site in our ‘directive’ pathway (e.g. CBT/ ACT/ CFT approaches. EMDR would be a plus). As well as direct inpatient and outpatient work, this role will also include supervision to nurses/AHPs within the trust, psychological consultation to medical and rehabilitation teams, and service development.

Main duties of the job

To work within our ‘directive’ pathway providing structured therapies such as CBT/ ACT/ CFT (our other pathways are: exploratory, family, psychiatry/ mental health nursing)

Provide a high quality specialist clinical/ counselling psychologist/CBT therapy service to adult cancer patients within the context of the Adult Psychological Support Service, including assessment and evidence based interventions associated with the complex physical and psychological impacts of a cancer diagnosis.

Work autonomously, within professional guidelines, code of conduct and the overall framework of the team/trust policies and procedures.

Provide specialist advice and consultation on patients’ psychological care to colleagues through psychosocial meetings, multidisciplinary team meetings and attendance at clinics if appropriate.

Utilize research skills for audit, policy and development of psychological services for patients with cancer

Develop, organize, and deliver specialist psychological education and training for multi-professionals caring for individuals impacted by cancer; and patients and their carers as required by The Royal Marsden Trust in collaboration with other colleagues.

Offer, where appropriate, clinical supervision to attached trainee psychological practitioners, assistant psychologists working the team, clinical nurse specialists/ other members of health care team as appropriate.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To work as a clinician in the delivery of a psychology service to the Royal Marsden Hospital NHS Trust, working directly and indirectly with patients, and with members of the multi-disciplinary team involved in the care of cancer patients, to improve patients’ psychological wellbeing, quality of life and coping strategies.

To provide specialist psychological assessments for patients referred to the Adult Psychological Support Service and make decisions about support options taking into account the individual needs and choice of the patient, their clinical treatment, prognosis and resources available; referring on to the most appropriate specialists if required.

To provide specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to formulation, diagnosis and development of a psychological care treatment plan. To contribute to multi-disciplinary team meetings across tumour sites and clinical services where appropriate, develop relationships with medical teams and offer supervision where appropriate.

You will be joining a supportive and friendly team of qualified and trainee psychological practitioners from across a range of clinical backgrounds, including, counselling, psychology (clinical and counselling), psychosexual therapy, psychotherapy, psychiatry and mental health nursing. There is excellent internal and external CPD provision.

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. NMC Registered Nurse RN 1 OR Allied Health Professional (e.g. radiographer, OT, physiotherapist, SALT, dietician) OR Medicine/ Paramedic professional qualification AND PGDip training in CBT therapy AND Accredited with BABCP For CBT Therapist without dual health care training • M.Sc. in CBT therapy AND Accredited with BABCP For clinical/counselling psychologist Post-Graduate Doctoral level training in Clinical / Counselling Psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996), accredited by the BPS AND Registration with Health Care Professions Council

Desirable criteria

2. Training in one or more additional specialised areas of clinical practice, including CBT and 3rd wave CBT/EMDR/training in management of late effects and survivorship issues in cancer care or physical health
3. Recognised supervision qualification/ training

4. Psychology experience in acute settings
5. Psychology experience working with individuals with long term, life threatening physical illness
6. Experience using CBT/ ACT/ CFT approaches in pure and integrated ways
7. Psychological care and treatment as a professionally qualified clinician
8. Experience of working within multicultural settings

Desirable criteria

9. Experience using EMDR
10. Experience of providing clinical supervision in a group and 1:1
11. Psychological experience working in Cancer care/ Palliative Care/ HIV/ Critical Care
12. Evidence of research productivity

The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the upmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient-facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
