Job Opportunity

Job Description: Start date: September 2026 Location: Stevenage Duration: 3 years

About the Apprenticeship

Propulsion Manufacturing Technician Craft Apprentice at Airbus provides an opportunity to develop mechanical and electrical skills within a stimulating manufacturing environment. You will be part of a team that builds propulsion systems for satellites and spacecraft and gain hands-on experience in a supportive and innovative environment.

You will work on projects that push the boundaries of technology, with a focus on mechanical and electrical precision, problem-solving, and practical outcomes to support space exploration.


What you will be doing

Year 1: Study towards a Level 2 Engineering Operative ST0537 on the mechanical/electrical pathways, gaining both academic knowledge and practical experience.

Year 2: Experience in the Propulsion Production area to understand how a Satellite is manufactured at Airbus Defence & Space, including working in small teams or one-to-one to manufacture Spacecraft Propulsion systems using approved processes and advanced production techniques.

Your key activities & responsibilities will be: Mechanical Assembly

* Use of various adhesives and bonding methods
* Use of hand measuring tools to meet tight tolerances
* Installation of various components to satellite structures
* Installation of connector brackets
* Bonding of heater mats, thermocouples and thermostats to surfaces
* Following processes and tolerances to drawings on 3DX
* Orbital Welding: weld propulsion systems into sub-assemblies and then assemble on the full satellite structure
* Learn bending, shaping and cutting Titanium and Stainless-Steel pipework
* Electrical: learn techniques such as crimping, splicing, soldering and harness forming
* Installation of electrical components such as latch valves, pressure transducers and thrusters
* End-to-end harness installation and routing

Year 2 (continued): A week of Team Building Activities at an Outward Bound UK site, with activities like rock climbing, hiking, abseiling, canoeing, and more.

Year 3: On-site progression to fully apply skills while aligning with business needs and skills matrix.


Requirements

No strict entry requirements for college, though a Grade 3 in Maths and English is desirable. Essential qualities include good communication, strong time-keeping, excellent work ethic, and a can-do attitude. Ability to work both in a team or individually, follow technical instructions, and no prior propulsion experience required as training will be provided.

You may include examples such as DIY projects, building and fixing things, tinkering with technology, building models, baking or cooking, or other practical projects. You may attach photos or a short video to illustrate your work.

Important Information: This job is offered as a government-funded Apprenticeship, subject to eligibility for Apprenticeship Levy Funding. Applicants must meet criteria such as not already holding a qualification at the same or higher level in the same subject area and be eligible under current funding rules. You will be subject to a BPSS check and may need UK SC-level Security Clearance or Export Control depending on the role.
