About us As a Planning Enforcement Officer, you will play a vital role in ensuring that development is carried out lawfully and determining when action is required in the public interest. Planning enforcement is about fairness, integrity and making a difference. As a Planning Enforcement Officer, you will: Manage, prioritise and investigate a varied and interesting caseload of planning enforcement complaints Interpret legislation, policy and planning history Undertake site visits and gather evidence Negotiate solutions where appropriate Prepare reports and recommendations Draft and serve formal notices where necessary Represent the Council in appeals and legal proceedings relating to enforcement cases You will be supported by experienced colleagues within our Development Management team, including planning, heritage, landscape and tree officers and will work collaboratively with other disciplines, such as Environmental Health, Housing, Building Control and City Services. Who We’re Looking For Experienced Enforcement Officers You may already work in planning enforcement or a related regulatory service and be looking for: Greater professional autonomy A supportive and progressive authority and team Opportunities to broaden your expertise A better work-life balance Graduates / Aspiring Enforcement Professionals If you have: A degree in Town Planning, Law, Geography or a related subject A strong interest in planning law, regulatory work and the built and natural environment Excellent analytical and written skills A keen eye for detail and the ability to maintain accurate records and take comprehensive notes Confidence communicating in sometimes challenging situations We offer mentoring and development to help you build a long-term career in planning enforcement. You Will Bring Strong written and verbal communication skills, for a wide range of people Sound judgement and attention to detail The organisational skills to manage and prioritise a varied caseload Competency in using standard office software. Experience of GIS and case management systems is desirable Accuracy and confidence in interpreting legislation and policy Negotiation skills and professional resilience A commitment to delivering high standards of customer service An appreciation of heritage and environmental protection A full driving licence and access to a vehicle for site visits (or ability to meet travel requirements) Experience in a planning or enforcement related role is strongly desirable, but is not essential for candidates who can demonstrate the aptitude, commitment and ambition to develop within the role.
