Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine
Permanent Post -- Due to Retirement
We are excited to offer a new Consultant post in Rehabilitation Medicine, created due to retirement. This permanent role provides the opportunity to work within a well-established, supportive inpatient team delivering Level 2 neurorehabilitation, alongside outpatient responsibilities.
The ward forms a secure and structured base for the service, with most patients transitioning through this setting. Our increasingly community-focused approach has successfully reduced inpatient length of stay and enabled more people to be supported at home. This has expanded the reach and impact of the team across a broader spectrum of care.
The department is ambitious, forward-thinking, and growing. We are committed to evolving and improving the service in response to patient needs, with further developments expected. We would particularly welcome interest from doctors who bring additional skills or specialist interests that could complement our direction.
This is an excellent opportunity to shape and grow a consultant role within a modern rehabilitation service. We strongly encourage interested candidates to contact the department for an informal conversation.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will provide Consultant input to Snowdon Ward, a 14-bed Level 2 specialist neurological rehabilitation unit. The MDT includes rehabilitation nurses, physiotherapists, OTs, SALT, dietitians, and psychology. Average length of stay is 50 days with around 100 admissions annually. The Consultant will manage half the patients, in collaboration with a senior rehabilitation colleague. A rotational STR and GP trainee oversee day-to-day care, with the Consultant leading weekly MDTs, ward rounds, and family meetings as needed. Close links exist with Wessex Neurological Centre, the main referral source, with weekly liaison rounds. Discharge planning is supported by level 3 rehab beds and the Snowdon at Home team.
The Kite Unit, also on-site, offers neurobehavioural rehab to 10 inpatients. Co-location supports integrated plans for complex physical and mental health needs.
The post includes weekly outpatient clinics at Western Community Hospital via UHS. Clinics typically include 2 new and 5 follow-up patients, with time allocated for between-appointment clinical advice. Secretarial support is provided by UHS. Specialist clinics include spasticity, young adults/transition, neuromuscular, and MND. Patients may be seen face to face, by phone, or via video.
