Part Time Skilled Gardener – Vacancy

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a part-time Skilled Gardener to maintain and assist in the future development of an established large country garden to a high horticultural standard near Bruton, Somerset. This position is offered to self-employed skilled gardeners in the locality, on the basis of 2 or 3 days per week to focus on the finer horticultural aspects of the garden.

The estate as a whole extends across 180-acres of farmland and paddocks, with approximately 3-acres of formal gardens surrounding the main house. These beautifully designed gardens include a cut-flower area, productive vegetable garden, and a traditional croquet lawn. The grounds are further enhanced by ornamental planting around the main house and pool, neatly maintained hedges, and a network of winding pathways that weave through the gardens.

General maintenance duties will include but are not limited to pruning, propagating, weeding, edging, crop rotation, seasonal mulch and compost management. Our client requires someone with experience in garden maintenance, farm, or estate work, who is able to maintain the gardens and also assist across the wider estate, outbuildings, and with larger machinery. Experience in the use and maintenance of a wide range of gardening machinery as well as PA1 and PA6 spraying certificates, and a chainsaw certification are desirable for this position. The house is equipped with machinery, which the gardener should be capable of maintaining between services.

Our client seeks an experienced and skilled gardener to help maintain the gardens on a year-round basis following the annual calendar. Applicants will ideally possess an academic horticultural qualification, such as an RHS level 2 or equivalent, combined with extensive experience working in a similar role within a private estate setting. As such, excellent plant knowledge and technical skills are essential for this position with experience in compost management, propagation, spraying, weeding and rejuvenating beds.

A self-motivated, organised individual with a self-start attitude and proven track record of managing a large mature English country garden, with a strong work ethic and willingness to work to consistently high standards are qualities which are essential for this role. Candidates will be flexible and willing to extend their duties where needed. As such, this is a physically demanding position which requires a fit and strong individual who is comfortable working in all weathers.

Working hours will be 7:00am – 4:00pm with a 1-hour unpaid break. With regards to which days the gardener will work, the owners are flexible with this and are open to discussion with the candidate. Applicants should live within commuting distance of the vacancy and have a full driving licence with their own transport.

As this role is based within a private estate setting, applicants must be loyal and trustworthy, and would be expected to exercise the utmost discretion at all times to respect the privacy of the owners. Please note, the successful candidate with be offered subject to extensive reference checks as well as a DBS check.
