We are looking to recruit a dynamic locum Consultant to work in our established Diabetes and Endocrine Department at Bedford Hospital, part of the Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The appointment is for a full-time replacement post, but flexible working or less than full-time applications are encouraged and may be accommodated.
The role involves providing outpatient services for general endocrine and diabetes care, adapting to advances in diabetes technology and patient autonomy. The appointee will also be part of the consultant team providing inpatient care to general medical patients. We welcome candidates with sub-specialty interests and support those early in their consultant career to develop a specialist interest.
The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team including Doctors, Nurses, Dieticians, Podiatrists, secretarial and support staff, delivering inpatient and outpatient Diabetes and Endocrine services, as well as General Medical inpatient care. They will work closely with existing Consultants to provide acute inpatient services, specialist diabetes services, and endocrinology diagnostics and treatments.
Out of hours and on-call opportunities may include participation in the Acute Consultant on-call rota, with current commitments of 1:16 during weekdays and 1:8 on weekends. Duties include working in the Acute Assessment Unit from 17:00 to 20:30 for patient post-take reviews, with on-call responsibilities managed remotely afterward. Weekend on-call involves onsite review of all admitted patients in the AAU, with two consultants covering the weekend.
The post requires contributing to departmental activities, participating in service management, and engaging in ward-based teaching and supervision of junior staff. Involvement in undergraduate and professional training and attendance at clinical governance meetings are encouraged. The appointee should also contribute to the Trust's audit programmes.
Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust serves a population of around 700,000 across Bedfordshire and surrounding areas, with two hospital sites offering key services including A&E, obstetrics, maternity, and paediatrics. The Trust is committed to staff wellbeing, high-quality training, and delivering excellent patient care through advanced clinical knowledge and technology.
