Royce Research and Business Engagement Manager (Fixed Term) – Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy

Role type: Fixed-term. The funds for this post are available for 18 months in the first instance. Applications are welcome from internal candidates who would like to apply for the role on the basis of a secondment from their current role in the University.

About the Role: The University of Cambridge is seeking a Royce Research and Business Engagement (RBE) Manager to provide strategic leadership in strengthening the Cambridge materials community locally, nationally, and internationally. Building on the Royce Institute's established infrastructure and user base, the role will drive its next phase focusing on translational research and deepening research business engagement. Positioned at the intersection of academia, industry, and policy, the postholder will advance the Royce Institute's mission by supporting the Cambridge Royce spoke's thematic priorities: Atoms 2 Devices (A2D) and Biomedical Materials. The role involves shaping engagement strategies, fostering collaboration, promoting research translation, and supporting interdisciplinary growth.


Key Responsibilities

* Lead the development and delivery of a long-term stakeholder engagement strategy aligned with Royce priorities.
* Act as the primary liaison for industry, government, and the national Royce network.
* Build and nurture research collaborations across Cambridge and with external partners, particularly in A2D, 2D materials, imaging, and biomedical materials.
* Promote and coordinate initiatives such as workshops, road mapping, and networking events.
* Support academics in securing multi-partner funding bids.
* Leverage Royce facilities to foster innovation and knowledge exchange.
* Develop collaborations with internal stakeholders (e.g., Maxwell Centre, Cambridge Enterprise, Cambridge Zero).
* Serve as secretariat to the A2D Steering Group and represent Cambridge Royce in national forums.


Person Specification

Applicants should have substantial experience in academic–industry collaboration, particularly in materials science, alongside expertise in strategy development and translational research. A strong understanding of the UK research and innovation landscape and a proven record in stakeholder management and funding coordination are essential. Skills in communication, influencing, and event organisation are key, as is the ability to work independently and across teams. A PhD in Materials Science or a related discipline is required, with the capacity to represent the University at a senior level. The role is primarily office-based in Cambridge with UK travel as needed.
