Welcome From The Principal
Thank you for your interest in Outwood Grange Academy. Our larger‑than‑average 11‑19 academy is located in the heart of Outwood, Wakefield, with easy access to major towns and cities via the motorway network. As the founding academy of the Outwood Grange Academies Trust, we embody the organisation's core ethos of making students our fundamental priority, raising standards, and transforming life chances. I am truly proud of the work we do to ensure all aspects of education are of the highest possible quality.
About The Department
The English Department at Outwood Grange is a large, successful team of 20 teachers and three one‑to‑one tutors. The department is friendly and supportive, and staff put the attainment of students at the heart of their discussions. There is a mix of experienced teachers and new ECTs who are nurtured by a mentor from within the team.
We have a large allocation of classrooms equipped with video projectors, large television screens and visualisers. The library is also part of the department, reflecting our belief that reading is at the centre of what we do.
The department has a KS3 curriculum where learning branches from a range of engaging and culturally interesting texts, including three plays by William Shakespeare over years 7–9 and contemporary texts reviewed yearly. Students participate in a weekly ‘Immersive Read’ lesson, choosing texts such as Dracula or The House with Chicken Legs.
A whole‑school literacy strategy ensures all students can gain the educational and personal benefits of reading. This includes reading in form time, Accelerated Reader, and a variety of interventions for emergent readers who use the Ruth Miskin phonics programme.
As in all OGAT secondary academies, the department prepares students for Eduqas GCSE English Language and English Literature qualifications. We aim to make all teachers experts in preparing students for GCSE examinations, supported by the trust’s team of expert English directors who provide materials, coaching and joint lessons.
