Offer description

The Consultant Therapist will provide expert clinical leadership to develop services and promote respiratory care pathways for the local population. Taking the lead role and responsibility for the strategic and operational management of the specialist respiratory care services, working with the Lead Medical Consultant and Director of Nursing and Integrated Professions.

Through clinical leadership and strategic planning, the role involves leading and collaborating with integrated care systems (ICS), consultant medical colleagues, and service/divisional managers to deliver a robust and sustainable respiratory service model for the Healthy Lives Partnership (HLP).

This is an exciting time for respiratory services, and the successful candidate will help shape the evolution of respiratory care in Plymouth.

The role involves delivering services to patients with activity traditionally associated with medical consultants. The therapist must be a clinical expert with advanced respiratory practice skills, capable of leading clinical decision-making, diagnosing, and managing the patient journey autonomously across acute and community settings. The therapist will lead complex clinical decisions in changing and unpredictable situations, providing leadership and mentoring for advanced practitioners and clinical specialist therapists, and contributing to senior forums to shape patient pathways.

The Consultant Therapist will act as an innovator, motivator, change agent, and role model, with high autonomy to support and influence respiratory clinical pathways. Responsibilities include implementing national initiatives, reconfiguring services, developing innovative, person-centered care, and ensuring the application of evidence-based practices to improve patient outcomes. Engagement with the public, service users, carers, and families in joint activities is also expected to enhance respiratory care pathways.

We are a people-focused organization where every staff member matters. Patients are at the center of our work. Joining University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust offers opportunities for career development within a progressive environment. Our city is vibrant and modern, with a rich history of adventure.

Note: All communications will be electronic. If assistance is needed during the application process, please contact the recruitment manager. We support flexible working arrangements and encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds. Vacancies may close early, and if no contact is made within four weeks post-application, consider your application unsuccessful.

Expert Practice Responsibilities include:

* Demonstrating clinical expertise, working autonomously, and making complex clinical decisions based on advanced knowledge of respiratory conditions.

* Implementing peer reviews and evaluations to improve safety, quality, and health outcomes.
* Providing high-quality, values-based care that improves patient experience and supports decision-making in complex situations.
* Working positively with diversity, challenging stigma, and utilizing effective communication methods.
* Using a range of communication tools to effectively engage with patients and carers, including those with communication difficulties or special needs.
* Sharing decision-making to assess the effectiveness of interventions and transitions through care stages.
