Job Description:
Brief Description
You'll help keep our nation moving every single day.
A critical part of our work is the daily upkeep of the rail network. As a technician, you'll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway safe and operational for passengers and freight.
Our technician community comes from diverse backgrounds. If you're considering a career in rail, we focus on your transferable skills and behaviors. We will provide all necessary training for you to work safely and competently on the network.
If you meet the requirements, you can look forward to a rewarding career with a company that ranked in the top 50 of Glassdoor's 2021 Best Places to Work.
Please Note: There may be a requirement to work on call if you opt for the GTRM IMC25 contract.
About the role (External)
Our technicians serve as the vital link between team leaders and operatives.
Specializing in various disciplines, you'll become a specialist in Track: responsible for maintaining, inspecting, and repairing the track network (also known as the Permanent Way or P-Way) to ensure safety and efficiency. This is a manual role involving working with rails, sleepers, ballast, drainage, and structures supporting the trains.
Technicians work outdoors in all conditions, day and night. The work can be demanding, often requiring transporting equipment across challenging terrain. Safety, adherence to rules, and teamwork are critical, especially when working near moving trains at high speed.
You matter to your team
As a natural team player, you'll lead when asked, ensuring safe work delivery and verifying team competencies. You'll be a role model for safety and proactive in challenging unsafe situations to ensure everyone's safety.
You matter to us
Technicians can progress to become future team leaders. Your commitment to self-development is vital. We provide comprehensive training to develop technical and non-technical skills, even if you're transitioning from another industry.
While rail experience isn't mandatory, your transferable skills should demonstrate:
* Leadership: Ability to lead, motivate, and direct teams safely and efficiently.
* Effective communication: Strong skills to give clear instructions.
* Technical skills: Knowledge of inspection, faulting, maintenance, and renewal techniques relevant to your discipline.
* Safety: Role modeling safe behaviors, implementing safe systems, and challenging unsafe situations.
* Problem-solving: Persistent in finding safe, effective solutions and keeping skills updated.
* Willingness to learn: Continuous development of skills and knowledge.
* Relevant qualification: NVQ Level 1 or 2, or equivalent experience.
Additional Information
* Shifts: Includes days, nights, and weekends.
* Outdoor working: Comfortable working in all weather conditions.
* Pre-employment checks: Drug and alcohol testing, medical assessments, BPSS checks, hearing and eyesight exams.
* Driving license: Category B license required to operate company vehicles.
* Commute: Within 60 minutes of the location.
