Responsibilities
* Under the guidance of the Senior Director of Quality and Patient Safety, promote a culture of Safety, Performance Improvement and High Reliability. Lead teams, provide training and perform duties to support the hospital’s high-performance culture.
* Oversee the Risk Management office for BID-P, including all phases of actual and potential claims management. Identify exposures to loss and analyze the impact on the organization.
* Oversee and manage the internal Adverse Event reporting function; ensure appropriate responses to Adverse Events to mitigate threats to safety and address serious issues.
* Collaborate with Nurse Directors, Managers, providers and other staff to keep personnel informed regarding risk management and patient safety issues.
* Investigate and monitor all sentinel events and near misses within 72 hours; review event reports, conduct investigations and follow-up with appropriate management staff.
* Support and assist providers with disclosure of events when indicated.
* Lead Root Cause Analyses, Failure Mode Effects Analyses and apply Performance Improvement methodologies to improve error-prone systems and processes; assess risks of new programs.
* Conduct Risk Management orientation and develop educational programs based on needs assessment; conduct activities to promote risk reduction strategies.
* Represent the hospital as an agent for service of legal process; coordinate record requests; assist legal counsel with malpractice, hospital litigation and depositions.
* Refer lawsuits, claims and potential claims to CRICO; complete necessary claims paperwork; communicate with CRICO regarding claims issues; minimize loss exposure with BID-P insurance carriers.
* Work with staff, physicians, insurance companies, attorneys and others relevant to malpractice or liability claims; support CRICO and hospital counsel in the litigation process.
* Counsel hospital employees regarding legal proceedings; collaborate with Office of General Counsel as needed.
* Collaborate with Clinical Services and Medical Staff Officers to track/adverse outcomes and malpractice claims to improve quality of care and patient safety.
* Participate in Complaint and Grievance response; ensure timely, clear, respectful and compassionate responses to patient concerns.
* Meet with patients, families and staff to address questions about adverse events and help develop positive resolutions.
* As a member of Quality and Patient Safety, contribute to planning and implementing highly reliable clinical systems; promote continuous process improvement to improve patient care outcomes.
* Report outcomes to Administration and other bodies regarding risk experience and future optimization efforts.
* Serve as primary BID-P contact to Massachusetts DPH, Boards of Registration in Medicine and Nursing, and other regulatory agencies; lead investigations and reporting for adverse events and regulatory requirements (including PCA committee and Joint Commission).
* Manage equipment recalls and information related to equipment failures to ensure Safe Medical Devices Act reporting compliance.
Qualifications
* BSN required with current Massachusetts RN license.
* Master's Degree in Nursing, Healthcare Management or related field preferred.
* Minimum 5 years of experience in Healthcare Risk Management or Patient Care Management required.
* Risk Manager experience in healthcare setting preferred.
* Ability to work independently and communicate effectively at all levels; strong knowledge of performance improvement, patient safety and risk management concepts (RCA, FMEA, Disclosure, statistics, run charts, control charts).
* Strong organizational, analytical and computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); database experience preferred.
* Strong written and verbal communication; good listening skills; comfortable in emotionally charged settings.
* Experience in conflict resolution; prior experience in regulatory affairs and claims management strongly preferred.
Registration/Certification
* Certification in risk management (CPHRM) or obtained within the first five years.
Physical/Environmental Requirements
* Frequent bending, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, stooping, walking and lifting over 10 lbs. Occasional climbing stairs, lifting in excess of 50–100 lbs and sitting. Constant use of hearing, sight and speech. Frequent use of smell and touch. Frequent keyboard and telephone use. Constant concentration and problem solving.
