Job Summary
We are seeking an Assistant Technical Officer to join the Medical Engineering Department within Estates and Facilities. The postholder will provide day‑to‑day technical and logistical support to a multidisciplinary team responsible for the management and maintenance of a large and diverse portfolio of medical devices used across Trust and community sites. The role supports safe, effective and compliant use of medical equipment through stock management, device movements, basic maintenance activities and accurate record keeping. This is a practical, hands‑on role requiring good communication skills, attention to detail and the ability to work calmly within a busy healthcare environment.

Main Duties
The Assistant Technical Officer supports the Medical Engineering Department in the commissioning, collection, return and disposal of medical devices across wards and departments. Duties include:
* Management of stock and spare parts
* Commissioning of new devices
* Disposal of redundant equipment
* Collection/return of devices to wards and departments
* Creating and updating tasks in the Trust Asset Management System
* Basic electrical safety testing, routine servicing, calibration and minor repairs of medical electronic equipment
* Coordinating access for maintenance and testing with clinical staff, suppliers and colleagues
* Maintaining accurate service records and ensuring equipment is handled and transported safely
* Supporting apprentices and students, working in accordance with health and safety legislation, MHRA guidance and departmental procedures
* Contributing to a positive team‑based working culture

Person Specification
Essential Qualifications & Experience
* NVQ3 or equivalent qualification / experience
* Current full UK driving licence
* An appreciation of electrical, mechanical, pneumatic and electromechanical applications
* Knowledge of Health and Safety Legislation
* Experience in a similar/relevant maintenance environment
* Ability to work unsupervised with tools and equipment
* Good interpersonal skills, in person and by telephone
* Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with staff and suppliers under all conditions of urgency
* Basic fault‑finding skills
* Good analytical skills
* Computer use including database, word processing, internet and email
* Good levels of manual dexterity
Desirable Qualifications & Experience
* NVQ Level 3 in a related Engineering discipline
* Recognised IT competency qualification (e.g., ECDL)
* Relevant experience within a maintenance environment
* Experience of PAT testing
* Experience of working in an ISO9001 environment
* Experience of working in a Healthcare environment
* Report writing skills
* Knowledge of Medical Devices
* Knowledge of Audio‑Visual Equipment
* An understanding of the operation and calibration of diagnostic test equipment
