Job details

Post: Consultant (Diabetes & Endocrinology)

* Location: Southport Hospital / Ormskirk Hospital
* Salary: £105,504 to £139,882 per year + 3% On-call supplement
* Contract: Permanent
* Working pattern: Full-time
* Date posted: 10 September 2025

Clinical responsibilities

The GIM/Diabetes ward (Ward 9A) on the Southport site has 14 beds. The ward is covered by two Consultant Physicians, supported by a Specialty Trainee, a post-MRCP specialty doctor, trainees across levels, and Foundation Year 1/2 doctors. Consultants perform 3 ward rounds per week; daily review by junior medical staff for inpatients not reviewed by a consultant is expected. Board rounds on non-ward days may be required. Responsibility for ward governance and trainee supervision is shared.

Out-of-hours/weekend on-call arrangements include a defined rota with on-call supplement and PAs. The on-call consultant stay requirements, supports from AMU/ED teams, and governance considerations are described in the current arrangements. Time off in lieu may be negotiated after on-call duties.

Outpatient & Specialties

The successful applicant will participate in a rota ensuring ward input Monday–Friday with outpatient clinics (primarily New Patient clinics) and potential for a retained specialty clinic. Off-ward consultants will deliver additional outpatient clinics (new, follow-up, and specialty clinics). Rotation between ward and off-ward is 1:3 or 1:4 weeks depending on recruitment.

They will contribute to general Endocrinology with 1-2 outpatient clinics per week and 1-3 weekly diabetes clinics as part of a 10.0 PA job plan. Additional specialty sessions (in Diabetes and Endocrinology) are negotiable. New patient clinics typically review ~6 patients; follow-up ~10 patients (numbers vary with trainee involvement).

There are opportunities to develop a specialist interest in diabetes. The service aims to develop Diabetes foot care and Diabetes maternity care, and candidates with interest/experience in these areas are encouraged. Other subspecialty opportunities include endocrinology; we offer general diabetes clinics, a diabetes pump service, a diabetes young-adults service, and support the diabetes foot clinic (run by a vascular surgeon). A joint Diabetes–Obstetric clinic exists with obstetrics, with ongoing development; a monthly joint head and neck clinic with ENT is under review. Evening clinics may be possible with prior agreement of the Clinical Director.

Audit and Education

The postholder will participate in regular departmental and national audits, annual appraisal, and revalidation. There are departmental and trust governance meetings, weekly medical teaching sessions, and a monthly governance meeting. The Postgraduate Education Centre provides facilities for teaching and research. The Trust participates in undergraduate medical education with the University of Liverpool.
