Overview
We are delighted to offer Consultant opportunities within our General Surgery team, with a subspecialist focus on Emergency General Surgery. You will contribute to emergency biliary service provision and patient care for acute biliary conditions, working with Upper GI consultants and delivering high-quality emergency surgical care, including in-patient emergency laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
This role offers flexible sessions to support the Acute Surgical Unit and elective activity aligned to your clinical interests, in a collaborative, well-resourced environment committed to innovation and excellent clinical care.
Responsibilities
* Prospective cover for the Acute Surgical Unit when colleagues are on leave
* Undertake elective activity tailored to clinical interests (endoscopy, outpatient clinics, elective operating lists)
* Participate in audit, quality improvement, and directorate meetings
* Administrative duties and professional development through meetings, courses, and annual appraisal
* Teaching and research opportunities, including collaboration with Bristol Medical School academy and national portfolio studies
* Provide prospective cover for consultant colleagues during periods of leave (minimum six weeks notice)
* Collaborate with managers and colleagues to support service efficiency, resource planning, and service improvement initiatives
Typical duties and weekly plan
* Monday: AM – SAU/Theatres; PM – Acute Surgical Consultant Cover (Total: 2.5 PAs)
* Tuesday: AM – SAU; PM – Emergency Theatre Support, ESAC Clinic and Theatres (Total: 2.25 PAs)
* Wednesday: AM – SPA; PM – Outpatient Clinic (Total: 2.75 PAs)
* Thursday: AM – Flexible Session (RUH); PM – Flexible Session (Total: 2.5 PAs)
* Friday: AM/PM – Day Off (supporting work–life balance)
Qualifications
* Essential: MB BS or equivalent; clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for UK CST in relevant specialty
* Desirable: Post-CCT fellowship in a specialised subject
Skills and Abilities
* Ability to offer expert clinical opinion within general surgery
* Experience of audit management (desirable)
