Medical Laboratory Assistant – Central Specimen Reception

The post holder will work in the context of the Objectives of the Pathology Directorate and the Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as a Medical Laboratory Assistant in the Department. The principal duties of the post holder will be to receive and process specimens, and carry out routine tasks in the laboratory, which do not require the skill and training of a State Registered BMS.
Applicants will need to cover a potential 24‑hour working pattern on a rotational basis; most weeks will be 11:45‑20:00, including weekends and bank holidays.

Job responsibilities
SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL
* To receive, label and centrifuge clinical samples and to enter patient details into the laboratory computer system, data entry.
* Responding to telephone enquiries
* To ensure safe handling of hazardous and infective materials according to defined protocols, fully training given.
* To comply with all Departmental, Directorate, Trust and Statutory policies
* To ensure that a high standard of care and service is maintained to patients, members of staff and the general public in accordance with Directorate Policies
* To assist in the training of Students, Trainees and new MLAs within the Central Specimen Reception (CSR)
DEVELOPMENT / COMMUNICATION
* To ensure personal compliance with regards to mandatory, professional and personal development according to service needs
* Maintain an appropriate up to date knowledge base
* To ensure personal compliance with professional codes of conduct
* Attendance at relevant meetings and Staff Service Review Meetings
* Maintain awareness of future needs and contribute towards service developments
* Maintenance of personal training log in conjunction with Section Leader.
* To attend annual appraisal
* Comply with attached general requirements
Person Specification
Qualifications
* O' level/GCSE or equivalent in sciences, mathematics and English
Experience and Achievements
* Experience with computers
* Experience of working in a laboratory environment
Skills and knowledge
* Must be prepared to undergo in-house training
* Basic numeracy
* Basic literacy
* Able to follow instructions without deviation
* Ability to work under pressure
