Job Description:
College of Science & Engineering / School of Engineering
Institute/Discipline: Integrated Micro and Nano Systems
Contract type: Full-time (35 hours per week)
Fixed term for up to 5 years
The Opportunity:
This position is affiliated with the UKRI APRIL AI Hub that aims to develop AI tools to accelerate innovation across semiconductor technologies, microchip designs, and system architectures – leading to faster, cheaper, greener, and more power-efficient electronics. As one of nine UKRI-funded AI Hubs, this is a highly visible program both nationally and internationally.
The post-holder will work closely with a team of researchers and the APRIL operations team to develop novel AI capabilities, tools, and methodologies to enhance the productivity of engineers designing, developing, and testing advanced electronic devices and systems. The candidate should have experience in building “digital twins” for modeling device/system performance, incorporating automated testing routines. The research spans automated processes for new semiconductor devices to efficient modeling of complex circuits and architectures, including beyond-CMOS devices.
The role requires engagement with experts across AI and electronics at Edinburgh, other UK higher education institutions, and industrial partners to ensure research relevance in addressing state-of-the-art challenges.
The successful candidate will have experience in project development and leadership within research, along with excellent communication, presentation, and organizational skills. They should enjoy working in a dynamic environment, be proactive, and collaborate effectively. The role reports to the APRIL Hub Director and involves ongoing engagement with other researchers and academic leads.
Your skills and attributes for success:
* A 1st class undergraduate degree and a PhD in Electronics, AI, or a related area, with proven experience in Electronic systems modeling or equivalent industry experience.
* Experience with AI tools for Electronic systems modeling automation and electronics testing and instrumentation.
* A research track record in AI, focusing on Electronic systems modeling or related areas.
* Experience delivering research results in Electronic systems modeling and/or AI, with peer-reviewed publications.
* Adaptability, openness to new ideas, and willingness to tackle new challenges, adjusting plans to meet priorities.
