At The Holden School, you’ll play a vital role behind the scenes—ensuring our buildings, grounds and facilities are safe, secure and fit for purpose so our students and staff can thrive.
About the Role
This is a varied, active and rewarding role where no two days are the same. You’ll take the lead on day-to-day maintenance, security and grounds work, responding swiftly to issues and coordinating both planned and emergency works. It’s a hands-on position that combines practical skill, independence and strong communication with staff and contractors.
Key Responsibilities
1. Keeping the site safe and secure – opening and closing buildings, acting as a key holder and responding to emergency call-outs when required
2. Hands-on maintenance – carrying out repairs, decorating and general upkeep without contractor support where possible
3. Health & safety responsibilities – completing routine checks, fire alarm testing, drills and water hygiene monitoring
4. Systems monitoring – overseeing heating, cooling and lighting systems and reporting faults
5. Contractor coordination – arranging, supervising and signing off planned and emergency works
6. Seasonal and specialist tasks – gritting, spill clean-ups, graffiti removal and keeping grounds tidy
7. Logistics and stock control – furniture moves, porterage, equipment management and waste collection
8. Pride in presentation – ensuring the school always looks clean, well maintained and welcoming
Safeguarding, Compliance and Professional Practice
9. Follow all policies relating to safeguarding, health and safety, security and confidentiality
10. Report any concerns promptly to the appropriate senior staff member
11. Uphold company values and maintain high standards of professional conduct
12. Participate in training, performance reviews and ongoing professional development
13. Carry out duties efficiently, effectively and economically at all times
Who we are looking:
14. Full UK Driving Licence
15. Proven experience maintaining buildings and facilities to a high standard
16. Strong practical, DIY or handyman skills
17. Previous caretaking, maintenance or grounds experience (school or similar setting desirable)
18. A proactive, reliable and self-motivated approach
