Under the direction of the Head Janitor, the Janitor will be responsible for:
1. The security of the premises and its contents, including the operation of fire and security systems and keyholding responsibilities. This will involve patrolling all areas of the premises and playgrounds.
2. The lighting and heating within the premises, including maintenance and operation of heating plant where required, replacing light bulbs and tubes, etc.
3. Porterage duties including storekeeping.
4. Handyperson duties including carrying out minor repairs to fabric and furnishings within the buildings. This also includes grass cutting duties and some grounds maintenance. In winter, the gritting and clearing of paths and steps to ensure safety around the school grounds.
5. Undertaking initial checks or inspections, identifying major repair works required, and reporting these to the Head Janitor.
6. Assisting in school lets, usually outside normal working hours, and providing necessary equipment (including ICT) and resources as required.
7. Assisting in securing the safety, welfare, and good conduct of pupils whilst in the school environs, particularly before school, during breaks, and after school.
8. Undertaking routine and emergency cleaning duties within the premises, including grounds, such as graffiti removal and spill cleanup.
From time to time, the Council may require the postholder to undertake duties outside those specified.
Aith Junior High School, located in Aith on the west side of Shetland, is a non-denominational school with a nursery, five primary classes, and a secondary department from S1 to S4, with 241 pupils. * The grade of this post is F.
* The salary includes a Distant Islands Allowance of £2,859 per annum (pro rata).
* This is a permanent, full-time position for 37 hours per week, 52.18 weeks per year.
* Preferred candidates will need to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme or undergo a PVG update check before a formal offer of employment.
