Mechanical Design Engineer

Our client has been established for almost a century and are market leaders in the design and manufacture of bespoke rail solutions for supply across the globe. They are seeking to recruit an experienced and enthusiastic Mechanical Design Engineer to join their design and development team. The role involves the design, development and technical detailing of mechanical systems and components for the locomotive sector, ensuring designs meet functional, safety, manufacturability and quality requirements. Close collaboration with manufacturing, operations and project teams will support new build, refurbishment and aftermarket initiatives.
Responsibilities
* Develop detailed mechanical designs and 3D models for locomotives, components and associated systems in line with project requirements.
* Produce accurate technical drawings, specifications and documentation for manufacturing and assembly.
* Collaborate with cross-functional teams including manufacturing, electrical engineering and service to ensure designs are feasible, safe and cost-effective.
* Perform design calculations, stress analysis and simulations to validate mechanical integrity and performance.
* Support design reviews, change control and engineering approval processes; assist in the selection of materials, components and manufacturing methods to optimise cost, quality and reliability.
* Resolve design issues arising during production, testing or service.
* Keep abreast of industry trends, standards and best practices in mechanical design and locomotive engineering.
* Contribute to CI initiatives, including design efficiency, standardisation and innovation.
Qualifications
* Degree qualified or above in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline and at least 4 years of experience in mechanical design within locomotive, heavy machinery or transportation equipment environments.
* Skilled in the use of 3D CAD software (Inventor, SolidWorks, CATIA or Creo) and engineering drawing standards with strong knowledge of mechanical systems, materials and manufacturing processes.
* Experience with stress analysis, FEA or other engineering simulation tools.
* Excellent problem-solving, analytical and organisational skills.
* Excellent communication and teamwork skills with the ability to work effectively across departments; high attention to detail and commitment to high-quality engineering standards.
* Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines with an innovative mindset focused on practical and cost-effective solutions.
