Clinical Director – 3 Year Tenure
1 PA + Responsibility Allowance (discussion around job plan activity to accommodate for the role)

The Clinical Director roles lead and direct a multi-disciplinary specialty team of clinical staff in delivering the priorities, goals and objectives agreed with the Divisional Director and the Barts Cancer Centre Director across the following domains:
• Well Led – Leadership, governance, and promoting learning and innovation
• Responsive – Services are well organised to meet the needs of patients
• Safe – Protecting staff and patients from abuse and avoidable harm
• Effective – Care, treatment and support achieves great patient outcomes
• Caring – Patients are treated with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect
The postholder will be personally accountable for the overall performance of the team and area in delivering national and local health care priorities, ensuring clinical quality, patient safety, and improving patient experience.
The Clinical Director will work closely with the Divisional Director, Senior Nurses and Associate Director of Nursing (ADON) and Operational Managers to support clinical leadership for the directorate.
The Clinical Director will foster a culture of learning and innovation, realising the potential synergies with education and research.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will be personally accountable for the overall performance of the specialty area and team in delivering national and local health care priorities, ensuring clinical quality, patient safety, and improving patient experience.
The Clinical Director will work closely with the Divisional Director, Head of Radiotherapy Physics, Head of Radiotherapy, Divisional Manager, other Clinical Directors and Clinical Leads, Matrons / Nursing Leads and the General Manager.
The Clinical Director will foster a culture of learning and innovation, realising the potential synergies with education and research.
The Clinical Director will be responsible for the management of the specialty team of clinicians, valuing good performance, addressing poor performance, and enabling staff to identify concerns and ensure that these are resolved. They will provide support to all staff, fostering a culture to develop strong and effective clinical leadership.
The Clinical Director will model the attitudes and behaviors of a senior clinical leader in accordance with the values of the Trust, to improve health and reduce health inequalities, and to promote equalities among both staff and patients

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

2. Main duties, responsibilities and results areas

The Clinical Director role will be ideal for emergent and established leaders who are interested in clinical leadership in a healthcare system which serves a globally unique population in one of the most dynamic and diverse areas of London.
a. Improving Governance (including quality, safety and patient experience)
• To help produce an annual audit plan for the service.
• To help ensure that all national audits relevant to the service are discussed and a documented action plan with identified accountable individuals, clear objectives and outcome metrics is put in place.
• To ensure that within each clinical area, effective systems and processes are established to enable the delivery of the clinical governance agenda and quality assurance protocols.
• To attend a regular multi-professional Quality and Safety meeting to review complaints, serious incidents, risks, and good practice in order to ensure that a documented plan of action in response to each is in place. The plan should include delegated individual responsibility, clear outcome metrics and timelines.

1. Working as a clinical oncology consultant within the Barts radiotherapy department
2. Experience of leadership and management
3. Experience of clinical governance and of the measures to ensure patient safety.
4. A record of partnership working
5. Track record of managing and developing staff

6. Track record of achieving financial targets
7. Track record of innovation

8. Demonstrable leadership skills
9. Able to think and act strategically and to articulate a clear vision and sense of direction
10. Able to define and implement policy development at site level
11. Able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
12. Able to influence and motivate through positive interpersonal skills
13. Able to prioritise and manage competing demands
14. Able to lead continuous change and improvement in services, encouraging the use of new clinical and service technologies within a multidisciplinary team.

Knowledge

Essential criteria

15. Registration with relevant professional body
16. Postgraduate qualifications
17. Employed substantively in clinical practice within Barts Health NHS Trust
18. Detailed knowledge of the Royal College of Radiologists clinical oncology curriculum and training programme for resident doctors in clinical oncology
19. Evidence of continuing professional development
20. A good understanding of the current context of health and social care, and of clinical learning and research
21. A good understanding of the specific issues in East London relevant to health and social care
22. A broad understanding of the systems for primary care, social care and commissioning
23. Knowledge of the Trust priorities
