Overview

The Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for a substantive Community Paediatrics Consultant post (0) at less than full time (7 PA) in West Oxfordshire & Autism Lead. The post is a replacement position joining a team of 10 Consultant Community Paediatricians. The postholder’s clinical core commitments will include community paediatrics/neurodisability assessments, management of children with developmental difficulties, special educational needs, and child protection medicals. The role includes providing community/neurodisability care to children and families in a defined area and clinics within a special school. The post involves leadership in multidisciplinary assessments and supporting the transition clinic for children with severe physical disabilities moving to adult care. Location flexibility includes Deer Park Medical Center in Witney and the John Radcliffe Hospital, with willingness to work across Trust locations as required.


Main duties of the job

The postholder will be based at Deer Park Medical Center (Witney) and John Radcliffe Hospital, with deployment to other Trust locations as needed. Responsibilities include routine Community Paediatrics/Neurodisability assessments, overseeing multidisciplinary assessments, supervision of trainees, involvement in child protection rotas, and leading multidisciplinary assessment processes for neurodevelopmental disorders. The role also includes contribution to the quarterly transition clinic with the Oxford Centre for Enablement for children moving from paediatric to adult care, and a leadership role within the department for complex cases.

Clinical commitments include management of a patch area including one special school, clinical assessment, multidisciplinary assessments, teaching and supervision, and duties related to child protection.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

An indicative timetable and job plan is outlined below. Working days can vary based on service requirements and will be agreed with the service lead and clinical director. The final Job Plan will be reviewed annually.

Typical weekly pattern (illustrative)

Day and Time blocks include clinical work such as Community Paediatrics/Neurodisability assessments, MDA assessments, transition clinic, clinics at Witney (special school), and Oxford CHOX/CR areas. Additional roles include CPD, teaching, supervision, and academic activities. Total planned activity: 7.5 PA.


Person specification


Qualifications

* Full GMC licence to practice
* MRCPCH, MRCP or equivalent
* CCT/CESR with Registration on the GMC Specialist Register in Paediatrics or within 6 months of CCT at interview
* CCT in Community Paediatrics or equivalent experience (or within 6 months of CCT at interview)
* Trained to level 3 safeguarding/Child Protection


Experience

* Comprehensive training in Community Paediatrics, including safeguarding work; hospital appointments at SHO/ST1-3 and registrar/ST4-8 levels; experience writing child protection reports and attending case conferences; court room experience
* Ability to make independent decisions at Consultant level and manage complex clinical problems; Locum Consultant experience in Community Paediatrics preferred


Skills

* Leadership: ability to lead a team of professionals
* Organisation and management: administrative and time management skills; NHS knowledge
* Communication: strong spoken and written English; effective interpersonal skills; experience in difficult communications
* Teaching and training: experience contributing to teaching; interest in teaching with portfolio
* Clinical governance and audit: experience in clinical governance, risk management, audit and service improvement
* Audit experience: conducting clinical audits
* General NHS knowledge and modernisation awareness


Other requirements

* Driving licence and access to a car for travel
