The Department of Classics and Archaeology seeks to appoint an Assistant Professor in Roman History from 1 September 2025 (or as soon as possible thereafter).

We are delighted to offer this exciting opportunity to join our thriving Classics and Archaeology department and develop Roman History at the University of Nottingham. We are looking to appoint someone with demonstrable research and teaching excellence in Roman History, the ability to teach Latin language, and the ability to speak to current issues, such as law, politics, slavery or public history. We seek to appoint a collaborative researcher with the ability to create synergies both within the Dept and across the University.

You will have a PhD in Roman History or another relevant subject area, and research expertise in Roman History. You will deliver teaching across our ancient history and classical civilisation curriculum and within your subject specialism. You will be expected to develop and win support for innovative research proposals and funding bids, and produce outputs that are likely to be 3* or 4* for REF purposes. You will be keen to pursue opportunities for impact, public engagement, and interdisciplinarity. Administrative and pastoral duties, such as Departmental Admin roles and Personal Tutoring also form part of the role.

You will lead and deliver individual and collaborative research and teaching in the Department of Classics and Archaeology and take on appropriate administrative duties. As a Department of Classics and Archaeology we have a broad research base, including expertise in Roman Britain, epigraphy, manuscripts, and provincial life. Relevant research Centres include Late Antique and Byzantine Studies (CLABS), Spartan and Peloponnesian Studies (CSPS), and Ancient Myth and its Reception (CAMRE). We also have a series of laboratories including equipment for 3D scanning, and access to additional facilities through the N-MESH network.

We are a friendly and inclusive department and particularly welcome applications from people currently under-represented at UoN and in Classics more broadly, e.g. people with disabling conditions, and people from Black, Asian or minority ethnic backgrounds.

Shortlisting is anonymous: we cannot see any personal data or the 'Additional Information' section in your application until shortlisting is completed. Shortlisting is by criteria-based questions, rather than a CV or letter.

Interviews for this post will take place on 26 August.

This is a permanent, full-time (36.25 hours per week) post, commencing 1 September 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Prof Hannah O’Regan, Head of Department, email: Hannah.oregan@nottingham.ac.uk; please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
