We invite applications for a Senior Clinical Fellow post at the Lancashire Women's and Newborns level 3 Neonatal Unit (Burnley General Hospital). We are looking to appoint a motivated and enthusiastic Senior Clinical Fellow. This post offers a fantastic opportunity for doctors training in paediatrics/neonatology to gain a broad based experience in neonatal critical care at a Level 3 neonatal unit.

This post is 1 WTE for 12 months in the first instance to commence in August/September.

The successful applicant will join our fantastic team of Consultants, Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Fellows, Deanery Trainees and Allied Health Professionals.


Main duties of the job

Duties will be in the neonatal department on the Tier 2 rota.

There will be a mixture of long day/night shifts and shorter day shifts. Duties will be divided between Intensive/High Dependency Care, Special and Transitional Care and the care of infants on the post-natal wards.

Duties will be shared with resident trainees [ST3-8] and Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners and supervision and education will be provided by Consultants.

The selected candidate will work as part of the Tier Two rota within NICU and will be responsible for clinical care of patients, the recording of notes (including Badger), communication with parents and colleagues and all other responsibilities of a resident doctor in the department.

We are a nationally accredited Centre for Endometriosis and Uro-Gynaecology Surgery.

Our Blackburn site is the centre for all acute services in East Lancashire

Burnley General Teaching Hospital is the site for the East Lancashire Women’s and Newborn Centre and is the largest in-patient consultant led obstetric unit in the North West. There is also a midwife-led birthing unit off the Hospital site in Blackburn.


Detailed job description and main responsibilities

- Attending to neonates admitted to the Neonates Unit.
- Conducting ward rounds.
- Assisting and supervising the Tier 1 (ST1-2/FY2) doctors in managing cases, attending or admitted to the NICU.
- Tier 2 on call duties out of hours for neonatal emergencies and continuation of care of patients on the NICU.
- Attending deliveries of extremely premature neonates, high risk deliveries and their immediate and after care management on the NICU.
- Communication with parents.
- Supervised outpatient clinical duties.
- Cover for unexpected short term sickness of colleague.

* •Satisfactory completion of previous training with experience of at least 6 months working in Level 3 Neonatal unit
* •Management of wide range of conditions in neonatal medicine
* •Competent and confident in practical skills in form of Neonatal intubations, insertion of Neonatal umbilical lines and long lines.
* •NLS provider certificate
* •Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate doctors
* •Understanding of and experience of performing audits
* •Familiarity with evidence based practice.
* •Experience of enrolling patients into research projects
* •Ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients, their parents and other relatives and with colleagues and staff in all disciplines.
* •Ability to supervise and support junior staff
* •Awareness of own limitations, ability to seek help when needed
* •Ability to work in a team with professional colleagues both medical and from other disciplines
* •Able to travel to meet the requirements of the post
* •Hepatitis B Immunisation course completed


Desirable criteria

* •Previous middle grade experience
* •Six months or more experience of working in Level 3 neonatal intensive care unit in middle grade capacity
* NLS instructor
* Teaching certificate
* Successful audit cycle completion and or presentation at regional meetings
* Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certified
