About the role
We are seeking a creative and enthusiastic Statistician to join the Modernising Medical Microbiology (MMM) Unit at the University of Oxford. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to high-impact research at the interface of medical statistics, epidemiology, and clinical medicine, working within a 40-strong interdisciplinary team spanning microbiology, public health, AI, bioinformatics, and data science.
You will design and deliver statistical analyses using large-scale electronic health records and pathogen sequencing data to improve infection diagnosis, management, and surveillance. Based at the Big Data Institute and the John Radcliffe Hospital, you’ll collaborate closely with the NHS, the UK Health Security Agency, and other partners to ensure findings are rapidly translated into practice.
The role contributes to two major National Institute for Health Research-funded initiatives: the Oxford Biomedical Research Centre and the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit in Healthcare Associated Infections and Antimicrobial Resistance. You will have the opportunity to apply innovative statistical approaches, publish in high-impact journals, and provide expert advice across disciplines. You may also supervise PhD students and support junior colleagues.
This post is full time and fixed term until 31/03/2028.
Part-time working will be considered (minimum 0.8 FTE, 30 hours per week minimum).
About you
You will have:
* A PhD or near to completion (or equivalent experience) in a numerically focused field
* Experience in applied statistics and data analysis
* Proficiency in R (or a similar statistical language)
* Excellent organisational, communication, and teamwork skills
* A track record of publications or presentations of statistical research
Experience with infectious diseases, electronic health records, machine learning, or good software engineering practices would be an advantage.
The successful candidate will be required to access data held by the UK Health Security Agency in order to undertake this role.
