HV Earthing Systems Design Lead
Location: Loughborough, Leicestershire

Salary: GBP50,000 - GBP65,000, DOE
Join a nationally recognised engineering and steel fabrication firm delivering end-to-end power transmission and distribution solutions across the UK. Due to consistent growth, we are hiring a Lead Earthing Design Engineer to lead the design and delivery of HV substation earthing systems up to 400kV.
This is a strategic role for an experienced engineer looking to act as a technical authority, mentor junior staff, and take ownership of complex, safety-critical infrastructure projects.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead the design of earthing systems for AIS and GIS substations up to 400kV
* Deliver advanced earthing studies using tools such as CDEGS or XGSLab
* Interpret technical data, soil investigations, and electrical system specifications
* Support site teams on soil resistivity testing and field measurements
* Produce detailed design documentation, including drawings and reports
* Provide technical oversight and mentorship to junior engineers
* Engage with clients, project managers, and key stakeholders to ensure quality delivery
* Assist with bid preparation by scoping design work and contributing technical input
Requirements
* Degree in Electrical Engineering or similar discipline
* Minimum 5 years of experience in HV substation earthing design
* Proficient in relevant standards: BS EN 50522, IEEE 80, National Grid TS 3.1.1 / 3.1.2
* Strong user of earthing software such as CDEGS or XGSLab
* Excellent communication skills and project coordination abilities
* UK driving licence and willingness to travel for site support
Desirable
* Chartered Engineer status or on the path to chartership
* Experience with lightning protection and electrical bonding
* Understanding of structural and civil interface aspects (e.g., foundations, trenching)
