We have an exciting opportunity to recruit a strong Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse to cover a period of maternity on the day surgery unit. We require an outstanding individual who is a committed, experienced registered nurse with compassion and strong leadership skills.
The unit is an established, innovative and dynamic multi-speciality area. It consists of an admissions area for patients attending hospital on the morning of their surgery and 3 bays for post-operative care. The unit Sister/Charge Nurse will be responsible for building close working relationships with all members of the MDT in order to ensure a seamless patient experience. The unit is open Monday to Friday and operate a 12 hour shift system covering the hours of 07.30 - 22.00 therefore, you will be expected to be flexible including late shifts.
Your duties on the ward comprises of Taking charge on a daily basis, to ensure staff are supported and skills utilised to best promote safe care and patient experience, to ensure patient flow is optimised, communicate with theatre, day to day rota management to ensure safe staffing, supporting staff to grow and develop to deal with concerns and incidents as they happen .
You will be expected to assist the Unit Manager in completing Audits, the Healthroster, Datix’s, complaints, appraisals and governance investigations therefore experience in these areas are an advantage.
Main duties of the job
We are a nurse led surgical day case unit who are looking for a experienced band 5 surgical nurse who feels ready to enhance there skills in leadership and step in to the exciting but demanding role.
Working alongside the Unit Manager, you will be required to motivate the team and ensure the team work well together to provide a seamless service for patients attending for surgery. You will be required to support an environment and pathways which enables patients to attend with confidence. You will be responsible for the highest standards in safety, quality and clinical governance, whilst delivering outstanding patient care.
Day surgery brings recognised benefits for both patients and system wide efficiencies related to patents quality and experience, reduced waiting times, release of valuable beds stock and significant financial implications. You will be leading and co-ordinating the unit on our busy, fast flowing surgical day case ward and supporting admissions and discharges in a safe timely manner to ensure patient flow and theatre time is utilised well.
Research shows that managing day surgery activity through a dedicated unit results in increased productivity and improved outcomes in terms of unplanned admission rates and postoperative symptoms.

To ensure the provision of excellent care with compassion the unit Sister/Charge Nurse is responsible for:
1. Ensuring that the nursing team within their department are adequately resourced and organised.
2. Ensuring the nursing team are adequately supported and developed to deliver excellent care with compassion in line with the Trust’s Values & Nursing & Midwifery Professional Framework.
3. With the help of the Unit Manager you will be expected to develop the unit nursing team and administration team by being a visible and strong role model providing leadership and direction to the team, capitalising on research and development opportunities, providing clinical supervision and advice for staff and students in order to support them in reaching their full potential
4. Ensuring the productive operation of the unit/department through the monitoring and maintenance of standards that create a safe, clean and organised environment for patients and staff.
