We have an exciting opportunity for a Production Engineer to join Norgine.
Role Overview:
The Production Engineer will play a vital role in supporting the site's Engineering and Reliability teams by manufacturing and repairing components, preparing PPM kits, and identifying continuous improvement opportunities within a highly regulated pharmaceutical manufacturing environment. The role will also lead innovation initiatives, including the integration of 3D printing technologies for spare part production and prototyping. A key element of the position is ownership of the engineering workshop, ensuring the highest standards of Health, Safety, GMP compliance, and 5S workplace organisation. The Production Engineer will also collaborate with the Engineering Storeperson to apply technical knowledge and reverse engineering techniques to optimise spare part procurement and reduce costs. Additionally, the role includes training and mentoring apprentices in safe machining, fabrication, and engineering practices.

Requirements
Key Responsibilities:
* Workshop Operations & Engineering Support:
* Manufacture, repair, and modify mechanical components to support planned, corrective, and improvement maintenance activities within GMP and non-GMP areas.
* Provide technical support to shift engineers during breakdowns and planned maintenance activities.
* Prepare and assemble kits for Planned Preventive Maintenance (PPM) tasks to ensure efficient maintenance execution.
* Maintain and calibrate all workshop tools and equipment in line with GMP and quality standards.
* Ensure traceability and documentation of all manufactured components in compliance with Good Documentation Practices (GDP).
Workshop Health, Safety & Compliance
* Act as the Health & Safety owner for the engineering workshop, ensuring all operations comply with PUWER, LOLER, COSHH, DSEAR, ISO 45001, and internal safety procedures.
* Develop and maintain risk assessments, Safe Systems of Work (SSOW), and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all workshop activities.
* Lead by example in promoting a culture of safety, compliance, and Good Engineering Practice (GEP).
* Conduct regular inspections, toolbox talks, and safety audits to ensure continued compliance and operational discipline.
Reliability & Continuous Improvement
* Collaborate closely with the Reliability Engineering team to identify failure modes, drive root cause analysis (RCA), and implement reliability improvements.
* Support and lead corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) following equipment failures.
* Drive continuous improvement activities to enhance reliability, maintainability, and performance of equipment.
* Champion 5S principles within the workshop, ensuring the area remains clean, organised, and efficient, with all tools and materials correctly stored and labelled.
3D Printing & Innovation
* Lead the introduction and application of 3D printing (additive manufacturing) for prototype and non-critical spare part production.
* Identify components suitable for additive manufacturing, ensuring compliance with GMP material and functional requirements.
* Develop CAD models and maintain a validated digital library of printable spare parts.
* Stay informed of new developments in 3D printing technology to drive innovation and operational efficiency.
Stores Support & Cost Optimisation
* Work collaboratively with the Engineering Storeperson to identify cost-saving opportunities through reverse engineering and local manufacture of spare parts.
* Apply engineering expertise to assess component design, materials, and tolerances to enable reliable and compliant reproduction of parts.
* Support technical investigations into obsolete or long lead-time spares and propose engineering alternatives.
* Contribute to developing an efficient, cost-effective, and well-documented spare parts strategy aligned with site reliability goals.
* Regular use of ERP system to source new parts.
Training & Apprenticeship Development
* Mentor, coach, and train apprentices and junior engineers in machining, fabrication, and safe workshop practices.
* Support structured development plans, ensuring apprentices gain core competencies in technical skills and safety awareness.
* Promote a culture of learning, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the engineering function.
Key Skills & Attributes
* Strong background in mechanical engineering, machining, and fabrication.
* Proven ability to manage workshop safety, compliance, and organisation (5S, GMP, GEP).
* Proficient in CAD design and 3D printing technologies (FDM, SLA).
* Strong understanding of reliability and maintenance principles (PPM, RCA, FMEA, TPM).
* Excellent communication and mentoring skills to support apprentice and cross-functional development.
* Innovative and cost-conscious mindset with strong attention to detail.
* Proactive in driving safety, efficiency, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications & Experience
* Time-served apprenticeship or equivalent qualification in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Maintenance Engineering.
* Experience working within a pharmaceutical or GMP-regulated manufacturing environment is essential.
* Skilled in manual machining, fabrication, and mechanical fitting.
* Proficient in CAD (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Fusion 360) and additive manufacturing.
* Knowledge of GMP, GEP, GDP, and pharmaceutical quality systems.
* Experience supporting stores or procurement activities through technical assessment or reverse engineering is advantageous.
* IOSH Managing Safely or NEBOSH qualification (or willingness to attain) desirable.
