Role Overview –A Senior or Principal Flood Modeller / Hydrologist with flood assessment and flood infrastructure concept development capabilities who is developing project management experience. Candidates should be keen to be exposed to a broad range of project types including major infrastructure; reservoirs; river works; and flood protection schemes. They should be highly proficient in the use of FloodModeller, TuFLOW and/or InfoWorks, as well as in the use of GIS. They will contribute to delivering sustainable, resilient flood risk and drainage solutions across sectors.
Candidates at Principal level would be chartered with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) or Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM). Senior level candidates would be expected to be close to ready for Professional Review with one of these institutions and committed to achieving chartered status in the next 12 to 18 months. The roles offer the opportunity to develop skills in team management or specialism development, and thereafter career progression.
As site work and attendance at meetings are part of the role, candidates are required to hold a driving licence.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Technical & Design
* Deliver high‑quality flood assessment work across drainage, water, and infrastructure projects.
* Apply advanced skills using FloodModeller, TuFLOW and/or InfoWorks as well as GI tools to produce accurate models, assessments, and technical reports.
* Develop practical and sustainable engineering solutions that respond to environmental, planning, and client requirements.
* Assist in technical reviews, ensuring assessments and outputs align with best practice and project specifications.
Project Management
* Support the planning, coordination, and delivery of flood assessment tasks and project packages.
* Monitor progress, manage priorities, and contribute to forecasting, resources, and project reporting.
* Develop experience in commercial awareness, risk management, and programme control.
* Take ownership of assigned tasks and deliverables, ensuring compliance with deadlines and quality standards.
Client & Stakeholder Engagement
* Attend meetings, workshops, and site visits (driving licence required).
* Communicate proactively with clients, consultants, contractors, and regulators.
* Represent Fairhurst professionally, clearly conveying technical information to varied audiences.
* Build strong, long‑term working relationships with partners and stakeholders.
Quality & Compliance
* Ensure all work meets Fairhurst’s quality management processes and industry standards.
* Follow relevant legislation, national guidance, and internal governance procedures.
* Maintain accurate records, transparent assumptions, and auditable assessment outputs.

* Principal Flood Modellers may lead project teams, take on line management duties, or develop specialist areas of expertise.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Qualifications & Professional Requirements
* Principal Flood Modeller: Chartered with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) or Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM).
* Senior Engineer: Near completion of Professional Review with ICE or CIWEM, committed to achieving chartership within 12 to 18 months.
* Strong experience in flood modelling, flood hydrology and flood risk assessments to support the promotion of flood prevention schemes, property development and major infrastructure projects across market sectors..
* High competence in FloodModeller, TuFLOW and/or InfoWorks as well as GI tools.
* Full UK driving licence (required for site work and client visits).
