Job summary
We have a fantastic opportunity for a Healthcare Assistant to join the team at HMP Garth, a high security Category B male prison located in Leyland. The prison has a capacity of around 792 and houses men serving long‑term and indeterminate sentences. In this crucial role you will work within the Multi‑Disciplinary Team (MDT) comprising primary care, substance misuse and mental health. Your focus will be primary care, but you will gain experience across all pathways.
Hours
This position is full time (37.5 hours per week) on a rota basis. The 8‑week rota is: Week 1 – Monday, Tuesday, Saturday, Sunday. Week 2 – Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.
Shift times: 07:30 – 19:45 daytime; night weeks 19:45 – 07:30. (2 of the 8 weeks are night shifts).
Salary
Annual salary £25,557 – £29,723 depending on experience.
Main duties
* Run and support clinics on the wings, delivering blood tests, ECGs, wound care, health promotion and NHS Health Checks.
* Support nurses with all aspects of care.
* Second sign in the pharmacy and support pharmacy staff, including medication rounds.
* Respond to emergencies alongside the nurse on duty.
* Gain experience in mental health and substance misuse despite primary care focus.

Qualifications and experience
* Hold a Care Certificate and/or NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Health & Social Care.
* Experience within a care setting (community, care home, hospital, etc.).
* Clinical experience is a bonus (venepuncture, wound care, observations, etc.).
* Non‑judgemental and compassionate approach.

Candidates must have the legal right to work in the UK and will be subject to additional vetting and security checks. The role requires a Disclosure and Barring Service check under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975.
