Job Description
The Ultra Engineering function manages a portfolio of specialist capabilities, generating highly differentiated solutions and products by applying electronic, mechanical, and software technologies in demanding and critical environments to meet customer needs.
The Project/Systems Engineering function provides expertise to all projects through the bid and full development lifecycle, ensuring that both project and statutory requirements are met while improving the effectiveness of the systems design function. It is responsible for system architecture and integration, design for cost and design for manufacture.
At this grade, professionals apply technical and professional knowledge, make independent judgments based on practice and significant experience, support decision making, and may act as project managers or mentors for junior staff.
Key Responsibilities
* Execute the engineering delivery of a programme or multiple projects of various sizes.
* Support the Programme Management team in planning and scheduling; propose optimisations to improve the schedule.
* Identify resource needs timely; collaborate with discipline leads to ensure requirements are met; contribute to recruitment strategy.
* Ensure engineering artefacts are delivered to budget and schedule, aiming to beat schedule and improve margin.
* Raise resource concerns or impediments quickly and clearly; propose and manage solutions.
* Articulate and quantify technical risks; actively manage their mitigation to minimise risk to programmes.
* Manage the engineering budget; monitor and forecast costs; implement solutions to remedy overspend or schedule slip.
* Coordinate engineering resources; perform day‑to‑day tasking.
* Provide input for business and customer reporting; propose improved metrics.
* Ensure all engineering work is pre‑authorised; seek cheaper or quicker solutions.
* Propose improvements and drive innovation to increase margin.
* Resolve concerns with other functions; optimise business needs across all functions.
* Manage the security of information as defined in the Security manual.
Essential Qualifications, Skills & Experience Required
* Degree or equivalent in Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or suitable Defence/Aerospace industry experience.
* Significant experience and full understanding of Systems Engineering lifecycle, System of Systems principles, capability delivery, development models, and associated processes.
* Experience developing high quality requirements and establishing fully compliant capability/solution.
* Experience in a product line/capability‑based approach supporting a capability framework/family of products and managing associated dynamics.
* Demonstrated experience and understanding of implementing the full Engineering lifecycle per ISO/IEEE/IEC standards and fundamental practices.
* Line management experience of a team of systems engineers across a programme or set of projects.
* Experience writing high quality technical documentation and formal technical reviews.
* Substantial knowledge of Systems Engineering practices, methodologies, tools, and technology trends.
* Experience in hands‑on capability development of hardware, software or firmware embedded solutions.
Desirable Skills & Experience
* INCOSE recognition (ASEP/CSEP/ESEP).
* Experience as a technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) and developing new expertise areas.
* Familiarity with NCSC security processes and delivering associated security artefacts.
