Senior Quantity Surveyor – Civil Engineering Contractor
Location: Durham
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience

A regional civil engineering contractor is seeking a Senior Quantity Surveyor to join its commercial team based in Durham. The company has grown its commercial function by over 50% in the past 12 months, following several recent project wins across highways, public realm, environmental infrastructure, and flood defence works.
The company operates across the North East and Yorkshire, with a project portfolio typically ranging from £100k to £10m, and a growing number of major schemes exceeding £20m. All projects are delivered under NEC contracts, predominantly for local authority clients via public sector frameworks (e.g. NEPO).
Role Scope:
The Senior Quantity Surveyor will take commercial responsibility for multiple infrastructure projects, either delivering a single larger project or managing a portfolio of smaller schemes concurrently, depending on experience and workload allocation.
Core Responsibilities:
* End-to-end commercial management of infrastructure projects, generally valued between £3m and £20m
* Administration of NEC contracts (Options A, B, and C)
* Procurement and commercial management of subcontractors
* Preparation of CVRs, cost reports, forecasts, and payment applications
* Identification and management of change, including early warnings and compensation events
* Valuation of variations, agreement of final accounts, and close-out of subcontract packages
* Cost reporting and commercial performance monitoring for internal and client stakeholders
* Mentorship and support of junior commercial staff as required
Candidate Requirements:
* Minimum 5 years’ experience in a quantity surveying role for a principal contractor in the civil engineering or infrastructure sector
* Working knowledge of NEC3 or NEC4 contracts, including change management and subcontract administration
* Highways experience is preferred; candidates from other sectors (e.g. energy, utilities, O&G, water) will be considered where infrastructure project experience is relevant
* Experience managing projects in the £3m–£10m+ range
* Ability to manage multiple workstreams with minimal supervision
* Full UK driving licence
Team & Reporting Structure:
* Reports to the Commercial Director
* Works within a regional team of 10+ commercial staff covering the North East
* Interfaces daily with operational and estimating teams
