Job Summary
We are looking for an enthusiastic and self‑motivated consultant to join our department on a substantive basis. Elective theatre activity at the West Middlesex site includes ENT (paediatric and adult), orthopaedics and trauma, podiatry, gynaecology, breast surgery, general/major colorectal surgery and urology. We would particularly welcome someone with expertise in perioperative medicine, pre‑operative assessment, trauma & orthopaedics and regional anaesthesia.
The role will involve covering general theatre lists and participating in the general on‑call rota, which includes emergency obstetrics and paediatrics cover. All jobs are appointed to the Trust and will involve cross‑site working and/or collaboration.
Responsibilities
* Provide high quality care to patients: medically qualified and maintain GMC specialist registration.
* Develop and maintain competencies required for the post.
* Ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care programmed activities.
* Involve patients in decisions about their care and respond to their views.
* Adhere to the Trust Customer Service Commitment and adopt a professional approach to customer care at all times.
* Develop clinical practice through self‑reflection, learning from experience, application of research into practice and active contribution within the multi‑disciplinary team.
* Provide high quality teaching to medical undergraduates and members of other health‑care professions as required by the Service Lead; contribute to training and teaching of medical trainees, students, doctors in training and other staff groups.
* Responsible for teaching and training non‑Consultant postgraduate colleagues.
* Collaborate with academic and clinical colleagues to enhance the Trust’s translational research/audit portfolio, meeting all research governance requirements.
* Work with medical, nursing, other clinical and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance in the following areas:
o Clinical efficiency (e.g., length of stay reductions, day‑of surgery admissions, reduction of cancelled operations and DNA rates).
o Quality of outcomes (e.g., infection control targets, reduction of re‑admission rates).
o Financial management (identification, implementation and achievement of cost improvement programmes, managing locum agency spend, monitoring and managing the drug budget, ensuring accuracy of clinical data).
o Operational efficiency (day‑case rates, waiting list activity and demand management).

Person Specification – Education and Qualifications
* FRCA or equivalent.
* CCT in Anaesthesia or equivalent (on or within 6 months of inclusion on Specialist register at time of interview).
* Higher Degree (desirable).
Experience
* Experience with management of high‑risk patients.
* Trauma & orthopaedics / regional anaesthesia.
* Implementation of quality improvement processes/audit (desirable).
* Previous consultant‑level experience (desirable).
* Pre‑operative assessment (desirable).
