Hardware Engineering Manager – Electronics
Location: Glasgow, United Kingdom. Hybrid working. Expected to work from the Glasgow site three days per week.
Thales designs and supplies advanced defence and security systems. As the Hardware Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of electronics engineers in the design, development, integration, and verification of complex hardware solutions that meet regulatory safety, environmental, and performance standards.
Key Responsibilities
* Define and manage the hardware development cycle, ensuring alignment with project and system requirements.
* Customize the engineering environment with processes, practices, and tools to meet company and project needs.
* Distribute responsibilities among team members and manage day‑to‑day activity.
* Participate in system architecture development and allocation of functions to hardware components.
* Lead work package management, including estimates and bids, and provide consultancy on electronic solutions.
* Provide technical direction, manage risks, and lead fault‑finding activities.
* Collaborate across multidisciplinary teams (systems, mechanical, software, safety) to develop optimal solutions.
* Develop team members, propose improvements, and review peer work.
Essential Qualifications and Skills
* Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
* Proven experience in hardware development and engineering management.
* Strong understanding of the hardware life‑cycle processes from requirements to validation.
* Excellent leadership and team‑management skills.
* Ability to tailor engineering environments to specific project needs.
* Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
* Demonstrated record of delivering cost, schedule, and quality objectives.
* Experience with schematic capture tools (Cadence, Mentor Graphics, etc.).
* Experience through bid/concept to system integration/qualification and support.
* Comfort with challenging design approaches and influencing processes.
* Experience supporting multiple projects simultaneously.
* Experience selecting innovative technologies and ensuring traction within the team.
* Contribution to policy and guideline definition for the business unit.
Desirable Attributes
* Knowledge of lasers and cameras.
* Passion for continuous learning and staying updated with electronics engineering advancements.
* Knowledge of the Chorus 2.0 design, develop and qualify solution lifecycle.
* Level 6 qualification in hardware engineering discipline (e.g., BEng(Hons) Electronics).

Flexibility
The role will be based at the Thales site in Glasgow. While a significant portion may be performed from home, on‑site attendance is required for testing, integration, and other lab work.
