Role Overview

A Patient Transport Crew Member in the NHS is responsible for safely transporting non‑emergency patients to and from healthcare appointments, including hospitals, clinics, and day care centres, by driving a dedicated vehicle and assisting patients with getting in and out, ensuring their comfort and well‑being throughout the journey; essentially acting as a dedicated driver and caregiver for patients who cannot use public transportation due to their medical condition.


Responsibilities

* Crew vehicles based at any of the Patient Transport sites, conveying patients between hospital treatment and their home while ensuring their comfort and safety during transit.
* Provide a high‑quality client‑sensitive service.
* Pass a driver assessment, which will be arranged with those successful at interview.
* Carry up to the maximum patient capacity on PTS vehicles, while maintaining strict appointment times.
* Maintain communication with PTS Control to enable the addition or cancellation of patients as necessary.
* Participate in a rota system covering any shift required for the Service.
* Maintain the dignity and individuality of patients at all times and ensure their needs are met, including toileting and feeding as necessary.
* Provide support, including lifting, pulling, carrying and pushing patients weighing up to and over 150 kg between home, treatment centres and vehicle using the appropriate equipment and techniques.
* Ensure a correct patient handover is carried out.
* Drive safely and comfortably for patients of different mobilities and dependencies.
* Work with colleagues in a friendly and supportive team where everyone has the opportunity to be the best they can be, valuing and respecting diverse experiences.


Qualifications

* N VQ 3 or equivalent level of experience such as HCA.
* Willingness to undertake training relevant to the post.
* Ability to communicate at all levels, including staff, patients and the general public.
* Self‑awareness and insight into appropriate behaviours, acting as a role model at all times.
