Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated Maternity Support Worker to join the community midwifery team within the Royal Lancaster Infirmary team which covers a wide geographical area across the Lancaster district .
Staff development is actively encouraged and there are good training opportunities.
The successful candidate will take a key role in supporting the midwifery staff by providing individualised care to both the mother and the baby within defined parameters specified by the registered midwife. Knowledge of women’s health issues and experience within both hospital and community setting is essential however training will be provided in other aspects of care such as breastfeeding and maternal and neonatal screening. A current driving licence is essential to fulfil this role.

Main duties of the job
* Assist in the implementation of direct clinical care in antenatal clinic, unit and in the home setting
* Undertake training and practice of agreed clinical competencies in basic nursing skills for designated area
* Support RM’s in providing information and advice on health promotion
* Keep up to date with changes in clinical practice and the effect of these on your role
* Work as an effective team member of the clinical team and support continued team development
* Ensure client dignity and individual client needs are met
* Ensure that all care should be documented appropriately and contemporaneously
* Assist the RMs in the delivery of care to a designated client group, demonstrating an ability to prioritise such care
* Teaching – Assisting with baby hygiene, infant feeding and parenting skills
* Perform a range of relevant clinical skills, eg phlebotomy, hearing screening and Newborn Screening.
Working for our organisation
We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
Our community services for adults are provided in people’s homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals and our main hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent, improve their health and manage their conditions through high quality care, advice and support.

Person specification
Education and Qualifications
* Care Certificate with Evidence of completion of MSW Level 2 and level 3 competencies or willingness to work towards level 3
* 5 GCSE’s Grade C/5 including English and Maths or equivalent Qualification
* NVQ 2 or equivalent and commitment to development within role
* NVQ 3
Experience
* Previous experience as a Health Care Assistant or Support Worker in a similar role
* Experience of working with new-born Infants
