Postdoctoral Researcher in Geochemical Palaeoclimatology
Join to apply for the Postdoctoral Researcher in Geochemical Palaeoclimatology role at The Manchester Metropolitan University.
The Department of Natural Sciences is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate for a fixed-term contract of 3 years.
About the role:
You will support the UKRI NERC research grant “Identifying orbital- and sub-orbital-scale controls on the Asian summer monsoon: a 500,000-year hydroclimate record from Nam Co, Tibet [NamCore-UK]”. You will work closely with the PI Dr. Leon Clarke and Co-I Prof. Andrew Henderson.
About the project:
This role offers the opportunity to work on the ICDP-funded “The Nam Co Drilling Project, Tibet: A one million year sedimentary record from the third pole”, involving international collaborators from China, Germany, and Switzerland. The project involves coring from a floating drilling platform at Nam Co, Tibet, at about 4720 meters above sea level.
Core processing and laboratory analyses are underway, focusing on carbonate geochemistry proxies to reconstruct past hydroclimate variability over the last ca. 500 kyr, including other dating and proxy techniques.
The PDRA will have opportunities to collaborate with international teams, visit the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research in Beijing, and participate in future sampling activities.
About the candidate:
* Experience in palaeoclimatology, especially carbonate geochemical proxy techniques.
* Ability to present research findings at workshops and conferences, and to publish in scientific journals.
* Potential involvement in undergraduate teaching to enhance employability.
* Experience with terrestrial or marine sediment archives and geochemical instrumentation (CF-IRMS, ICP-OES/MS). Knowledge of XRD mineralogy is a plus.
Application process:
* Submit a CV and cover letter via the application portal.
* Contact Dr. Clarke at l.clarke@mmu.ac.uk for questions or informal discussions.
