Job Description

The Deckhand is the seaman on board the vessel who performs the day to day seafaring duties on board. The Deckhand is under the command of the Master and reports to the Mate or Engineer.

The main duties of the Deckhand are:-

1. Moors & un-moors the vessel effectively and safely; operates windlass, capstan, shore-ramps & bow visors;
2. Keeps lookout on passage during daylight hours or darkness as required by the Master or Mate and assists the bridge team in the performance of their duties with particular regard to the prevention of collision, safety of navigation, avoidance of pollution, and alertness to the safety and welfare of passengers when carried;
3. Operates watertight closing arrangements and cooperates in emergency teams;
4. Operates and maintains fire-fighting devices and life-saving equipment. Musters and disembarks passengers;
5. Assists in all safety functions including the securing of vehicles, cargo, and mail as required, the sounding of tanks & spaces, and all like tasks that sustain or contribute to the safety and integrity of the passengers, crew, and vessel;

6. The grade of this post is G
7. Salary shown in the advert is inclusive of Distant Islands Allowance of £ per annum (pro rata), contracted overtime payment and unsocial allowance.
8. Permanent Full Time post for .05 Hours per Month, 52.18 weeks per year, working a shift pattern of 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off
9. A relocation package does not apply to this post
10. We will pay interview expenses from within Shetland
11. You must have the ability to travel throughout Shetland at short notice and where public transport is limited
12. We are happy to talk flexible working
