Job Summary
Assist in providing quality planned care for patients during their post‑ and peri‑operative phase across a range of local anaesthetic surgical specialties, supporting dermatology and other services within training and competency limits.
Responsibilities
* Assist in the operating theatre, recovery area, phlebotomy and clinic administration.
* Prepare surgical equipment, instruments and consumables for procedures.
* Provide nursing assistance to doctors and team members.
* Maintain high standards of patient‑centred care and effective communication with consultants, GPwSIs/GPWERs, theatre staff, healthcare and administration teams.
* Support the community team with extended roles and consultant‑delivered NHS services.
* Assure safe transfer and positioning of patients, monitoring and recording vital data.
* Complete mandatory patient checks, informed consent and data entry onto Emis system.
* Carry out post‑operative recovery and patient after‑care explanations.
* Maintain department hygiene, stock checks, waste removal and infection control.
* Participate in training, audits, quality improvement projects and appraisal processes.
* Ensure professional registration (NMC/HCPC) and revalidation.
Qualifications – Essential
* Registered Nurse or ODP with active NMC or HCPC registration.
* Experience in NHS or equivalent nursing, healthcare or operating theatre.
* Evidence of continuous CPD and peri‑operative patient care knowledge.
* Understanding of clinical governance, audits and use of Emis system.
* Excellent verbal and written communication, IT and record‑keeping skills.
* Team player, able to prioritise workload and work under pressure.
* Flexible and able to travel to CMS sites in Cumbria.
Qualifications – Desirable
* Experience working in operating theatres or as a theatre nurse/practitioner.
* Additional relevant qualifications in dermatology, surgery or clinical protocols.
* Mentorship or teaching qualifications.
* Leadership, management and extended clinical skills (venepuncture, blood pressure, ECG).
* Experience managing staff appraisals, recruitment and protocol development.
Other Information
Band 6–7 depending on skill and experience. Permanent contract, part‑time working pattern. Salary based on band. Locations include Carlisle, Cockermouth and other CMS sites in Cumbria.
