Major Projects Director
This challenging and exciting opportunity as Major Projects Director requires a highly qualified professional possessing a strong technical background and demonstrable experience in operating as a senior leader within the power utility or high voltage (HV) power sectors.
A highly attractive basic salary plus lucrative bonus earning potential and an extensive benefits package is on offer to the successfully appointed candidate, along with security and longevity of work. Hybrid working is available, with regular presence required in the Midlands office, and the expectation of UK-wide travel when required.
Due to an increase in contract awards, a significant forward order workload, and a dedication to continued profitable long-term growth, our client is now seeking to appoint an experienced Major Projects Director for their power division. You will be a senior operational leader, responsible for the delivery of multiple contracts, projects, and frameworks in your workstream, contributing to business plan goals. You will provide workstream-specific knowledge and expertise to the operations leadership team and the wider business to ensure future work opportunities are secured, risks are identified and mitigated, and operational excellence and delivery efficiencies are achieved.
The Person
* Graduate calibre with high technical competence, a relevant business qualification, and demonstrable experience in a senior role within recognized utility or HV power organizations.
* Fully commercially aware and experienced in managing large budgets across geographically dispersed regions.
* Excellent people management skills, along with advanced financial and organizational abilities.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, able to act persuasively at a senior level.
* Highly customer-focused, aware of and able to anticipate the company’s needs.
* Proactive in offering solutions and initiatives to improve processes, procedures, and efficiencies.
* Effective task planning to ensure timely and standard-compliant completion.
* Collaborative work approach to deliver results and support others.
* Knowledge sharing and role modeling to others.
The Role
* Manage operations and teams delivering utility infrastructure services.
* Report promptly to the Managing Director, supporting in prioritization, planning, and policy development.
* Take responsibility for P&L, including managing costs and operational efficiencies.
* Support meetings with managers and provide high-level feedback to customers.
* Liaise with external stakeholders such as LAs, DNOs, suppliers, and subcontractors.
* Drive project deliverables to meet business expectations.
* Lead and develop teams to ensure reliable service, meeting KPIs, quality, and audit standards.
* Support the SMT in developing standardized systems and processes.
* Utilize resources effectively across the group.
* Develop staff for greater responsibility and accountability.
* Manage team headcount through retention and strategic recruitment.
* Communicate key requirements across teams to ensure understanding and implementation.
* Effectively manage direct reports.
* Work with SMT members to meet targets.
* Prioritize customer satisfaction in operations.
* Build and maintain good relationships with customers and external parties.
* Maintain commercial awareness of the BU’s financial position and act as an ambassador.
* Monitor and report financial and commercial performance monthly.
* Own the P&L, managing costs and efficiencies.
* Report performance to the Managing Director in a thorough and timely manner.
* Agree and manage business budgets accordingly.
* Support the commercial team in bidding processes.
* Assist in increasing customer base and securing projects.
* Ensure operational processes and procedures meet business needs.
* Optimize operational systems for value for money.
* Ensure all technical work meets high-quality standards.
