Location: Luton (mostly onsite)
Duration: 6 month contract
Rate: £88.97ph UMB (Inside IR35)
A major UK defence programme is seeking an experienced Lead/Principal Safety Engineer to support the development and integration of advanced sensor, communications, and non-kinetic effect systems.
This role involves working across complex, interdependent subsystems as part of a cutting-edge technology demonstrator programme in the air defence domain.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Provide expert safety guidance to support system safety authorisation.
2. Ensure safety activities follow agreed plans and are correctly executed.
3. Identify and analyse both intrinsic and functional hazards; develop mitigation strategies to reduce risk to ALARP.
4. Derive and manage safety requirements across multiple subsystems.
5. Review and integrate subsystem safety analyses into a complete system-level assessment.
6. Align subsystem safety with aircraft-level safety cases.
7. Support and present safety assessments at formal design reviews.
Ideal Candidate Profile:
8. Strong systems safety engineering background in safety-critical sectors (preferably aerospace or defence).
9. Able to manage complex system interactions and lead multi-disciplinary safety activities.
10. Comfortable navigating aircraft-level safety regulations.
11. Skilled in working across engineering lifecycles and managing stakeholders.
Essential Skills & Experience:
12. Safety analysis of complex, high-integrity systems.
13. Leadership of safety work packages across multiple teams.
14. Familiarity with standards such as ARP4754B, ARP4761A, DO-254, or DO-178C.
15. Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
Desirable:
16. Experience with high-complexity design and high-uncertainty environments.
17. Knowledge of radar, sensors, lasers, or defensive aid systems.
18. Awareness of InfoSec considerations.
19. Familiarity with: Cameo, DOORS, Adelard ASCE, or Isograph tools.
20. Involvement in safety forums (e.g., IET, SCSC).
