Overview

The successful candidates will be responsible for assisting the qualified nurses to meet the basic nursing needs of the patients in their care, as well as working from their own initiative and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced working environment. You will be part of a team including fellow HCSWs, physician's assistants, qualified nurses and nurse practitioners, junior Doctors and consultants. You will liaise with ward clerks on admissions, transfers and discharges.


Responsibilities

* Meet patients' hygiene and toileting needs
* Serve meals and assist patients to eat and drink
* Take and record vital observations and blood glucose levels
* Maintain stock levels and PPE
* Assist with wound dressings
* Dispose of hazardous waste safely and correctly
* Document in patients' notes

You will be expected to have a good standard of literacy and numeracy due to documenting about patients' skin and the taking and recording of vital signs.


Training and Qualifications

* There is opportunity to develop with training and education; basic life support training is provided
* There are opportunities to train to take blood glucose levels
* Welsh Skills (Desirable): Speaking & Listening at Level 3 (equivalent to CEFR B2) or above. This is not essential; it is an advantage when short-listing and selecting candidates.

Ward Context

The Trauma and Orthopaedic (T+O) Ward are looking for an enthusiastic health care support worker who wants to make a difference. The T+O ward admits from the Emergency Department and the major trauma unit in Cardiff; it is an extremely busy unit comprising the Trauma Assessment Unit. Exceptional teamwork and a warm bedside manner are essential in a high-pressure environment. Previous hospital/acute setting experience is beneficial, but applications from those without hospital care experience are welcome.
