Job Summary: The role involves providing effective clinical leadership and management of the Intensive Care Unit. The Sister/Charge Nurse will maintain high standards of practice, support staff on a shift‑by‑shift basis, and provide clinical leadership and decision making. The incumbent will supervise and facilitate excellent patient care, manage time and prioritise tasks, and be involved in patient safety, risk reduction and development of colleagues.
Responsibilities
* Assess, develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care for critically ill adults in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, acting as an effective clinical role model.
* Apply specialist knowledge gained from relevant post‑registration courses caring for critically ill adults.
* Maintain a safe clinical environment conducive to patient care.
* Develop leadership skills and experience in ICU management.
* Promote and participate in the implementation of the RUH Nursing strategy.
* Develop and implement audit, quality and risk‑management initiatives.
* Review nursing practice and implement changes based on research and best practice.
* Participate in clinical supervision programmes; teach and act as facilitator/mentor/preceptor to nursing or non‑nursing staff.
* Serve as the designated manager of the Intensive Care Unit or act as deputy to the permanent manager, developing further leadership capabilities.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
* Current registration with the NMC.
* Evidence of significant post‑registration study specifically related to Intensive Care.
* Registered nurse with extensive critical‑care nursing experience.
* Completion of Steps 1, 2 and 3 of the national competency framework for adult critical‑care nurses.
* Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a designated team of people.
* Ability to prioritise own workload and that of others appropriately.
* Ability to work under own initiative within role boundaries.
* Awareness of the importance of teamwork.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
* Mentorship course.
* Management and leadership training.
* ILS/ALS certification.
* Paediatric critical‑care qualification and clinical experience or willingness to undertake relevant study.
* Completion of Step 4 of the national competency framework for adult critical‑care nurses.
* Insight into management issues, including change and conflict management.
* Understanding of basic principles of effective budgetary management.
