Winter Service Duty Officer

Contract: Permanent Position – Rotational Rota:
October to May – 4 on 4 off 12 hours shifts days and nights, Mon-Sun
May to October 5 days 40 hours per week, Mon – Fri plus standby 1 in 5 weeks during summer.
BEAR Scotland is a leading road maintenance and management service provider in Scotland, maintaining and improving Scottish Trunk Roads including bridges and structures through some of the most scenic, but challenging, parts of the country.
The Northwest Trunk Road Unit spans some 1,422km of trunk road through some of the most scenic parts of the country. It covers a huge area of Scotland, from Thurso and Wick in the very north of the Highlands down to Campbeltown in Argyll and Bute, from Uig on Skye to Perth and Stirling.
We have an exciting opportunity for a Winter Service Duty Officer to join our existing team on a full-time basis. The Severe Weather Manager (SWM) will be supported by 6 Winter Service Duty Officers (WSDO) working on a rotational basis.
Roles and Responsibilities:
The SWM & WSDO’s are responsible, on behalf of the operating company, for winter maintenance activities including;
1. Collection and Management of Weather Data
2. Maintaining salt stock levels and their storage facilities
3. Achieving response times for precautionary treatment, patrols and snow clearance
4. Plant & Communications
5. The Road Weather Information System (RWIS), weather forecasting service and weather radar system
6. Training of Staff & Operatives
7. Preparation and updating of rotas for duty staff, maintaining electronic records and manual records
8. Providing an annual winter service report
9. Liaising with Third Parties
10. Communicating with Transport Scotland during severe weather events
11. Participation in conference calls with Transport Scotland as required
12. Implementing Additional Resources when required
13. Ensuring completion of Daily Action Plans and Uploading to Vaisala Manager
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
14. IHE Winter Decision Makers – Desired but can be obtained in year 1
15. SIA Public Space CCTV – Desired but can be obtained in year 1
16. Proficient in IT – Essential
17. Good Communication skills – Essential
18. Ability to multitask – Essential
19. Ability to work under pressure
