Location: Based in Newport, covering customer sites across South Wales and the Midlands .
About the Company: Our client is a long-established provider of bespoke automation, robotics, and special-purpose machinery. Operating across industries including automotive, medical device manufacturing, packaging, and general industrial automation, the company designs, builds, installs, and supports custom automated systems. With multiple customer sites across the region, they deliver full lifecycle support from installation and commissioning to ongoing service, maintenance, and upgrades.
Role Overview: The Service Engineer will play a key role in supporting customers automated machinery and robotic systems. You will be responsible for installation, commissioning, reactive breakdown support, routine servicing, and troubleshooting of complex automated equipment. The role requires travel across South Wales and the Midlands, with occasional overnight stays.
Key Responsibilities: Service & Maintenance Perform planned preventive maintenance (PPM) on automated machinery, robotics, and control systems.
Respond to reactive breakdown calls to diagnose and repair electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and control issues.
Conduct on-site fault finding on PLC-controlled systems, drives, sensors, robotics, and safety circuits.
Complete service reports, job sheets, and documentation accurately and promptly.
Commissioning & Installation Support installation and commissioning of new automation equipment.
Assist with machine testing, calibration, and on-site acceptance activities.
Work with project teams to ensure machines are correctly installed and handed over to customers.
Technical Support Provide technical assistance to customers, both on-site and remotely where appropriate.
Advise customers on machine performance, optimisation, and maintenance improvements.
Support root-cause analysis and long-term fixes for recurring issues.
Customer & Team Interaction Act as a professional on-site representative of the company.
Communicate clearly with customers, project managers, and internal engineering teams.
Maintain strong customer relationships and promote a high standard of service delivery.
Essential Skills & Experience: Multi-skilled engineering background with a strong bias in electrical or controls engineering.
Experience servicing or maintaining automated machinery, robotics, special-purpose machines, or similar industrial equipment.
Competence in electrical fault finding, panel wiring, safety circuits, and control system troubleshooting.
Practical experience with PLC-controlled systems (Siemens / Omron / Mitsubishi or similar).
Strong mechanical aptitude pneumatics, actuators, robotics fixtures, end-effectors.
Ability to read electrical drawings and technical documentation.
Full UK driving licence.
Comfortable travelling extensively across South Wales and the Midlands.
Desirable Skills: Experience with 6-axis or Cartesian robots.
VSD / servo drive commissioning or troubleshooting.
Experience working with automotive, medical device, or packaging automation environments.
Basic programming or modification of PLC/HMI code.
Experience working with vision systems or inspection equipment.
CSCS / ECS / safety training (or willingness to obtain).
