The core responsibilities of the Phlebotomist are as follows. From time to time there may be a requirement to undertake other duties appropriate to the role and within the scope of the postholders competence. Obtaining patient consent prior to the collection of blood samples Performing venepuncture safely and in accordance with practice protocols and infection prevention standards Ensuring patients are treated in a professional, reassuring and compassionate manner Correct labelling, handling, storage and packaging of specimens Ensuring samples are processed and sent to the laboratory within required timescales Maintaining accurate clinical records and documenting procedures appropriately within the clinical system Using the specimen log effectively and resolving any discrepancies identified Maintaining effective communication with laboratory staff where required Escalating any clinical concerns or difficulties appropriately to the nursing or GP team Working collaboratively with the wider clinical and administrative team to support patient care and service delivery Supporting effective clinic flow and maintaining a safe and tidy clinical environment Undertaking opening and closing procedures in line with practice protocols and rotas In addition to the core responsibilities, the postholder may also be requested to: Participate in audit and quality improvement work as directed Support local initiatives to improve patient care and service delivery Participate in shared learning and team development activities Undertake mandatory training and maintain professional competencies relevant to the role
