About the Role
We are seeking a Functional Safety Systems Engineer to join the core engineering team at Ford Dunton Technical Centre in Essex. This role focuses on ensuring that complex distributed vehicle technologies — including powertrain, infotainment, active safety, driver assistance, and automated systems — meet the highest functional safety standards.
Responsibilities
* Execute ISO 26262 functional safety activities across cross-functional and global engineering teams.
* Apply ISO 26262 processes, methods, tools, and training to develop software and system safety work products.
* Use MBSE/SysML tools to model:
* Functions
* Interfaces
* Safety-related behaviours
* Safety concepts
* Safety analyses
* Contribute to globally shared safety ratings and model libraries.
* Produce technical documentation to support:
* Audits
* Safety reviews
* Programme milestones
* Lead technical reviews with stakeholders and suppliers.
* Collaborate with:
* Research & Advanced Engineering
* Product Development
* Quality teams
* Manufacturing teams
* Processes
* Methods
* Tools
* Training
* Support and mentor peers in Functional Safety and Systems Engineering best practice.
Qualifications
Essential: Bachelor’s degree in one of the following:
* Electrical Engineering
* Mechanical Engineering
* Computer Science
* Electrical Engineering
* Computer Science
Required Skills
* Functional Safety / ISO 26262
* Practical experience applying ISO 26262 within a product development environment.
* Proven understanding of the functional safety lifecycle.
* MBSE / SysML
* Experience modelling systems, interfaces, and safety-related behaviours using MBSE/SysML approaches.
* Technical Documentation
* Strong capability producing technical documentation and safety work products.
* Experience working across multidisciplinary global engineering teams.
* Systems Thinking
* Strong understanding of complex systems and “Safety by Design” principles.
* Professional Experience
* Minimum 2 years’ experience developing software-enabled systems.
* Experience applying ISO 26262 throughout the product development lifecycle.
Preferred Skills
* Experience with MBSE tools such as:
* MagicDraw
* Cameo
* Technical leadership experience.
* Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
* Ability to translate complex safety concepts into clear engineering requirements.
* Experience developing verification tests at:
* System level
* Vehicle level
* Experience with:
* Embedded software development
* Electronic hardware systems
* Verification planning and test analysis within automotive environments
Pay range and compensation package
Hybrid working arrangement with 4 days onsite required. This position is confirmed Inside IR35. Standard day shift role. No regular travel required. No overtime expected.
