Job Summary

Applications are invited for an enthusiastic and committed Paediatrician, with an interest in Paediatric Diabetes and Endocrinology for a 12‑month fixed term appointment to cover a colleague's sabbatical. Applicants with other complementary special interests will also be considered where these align with our service needs.

The post has clinical responsibilities covering services to children within the Acute Trust in conjunction with the other Consultants working as a team providing elective and emergency children’s acute service for children of North Northamptonshire.


Responsibilities

Clinical responsibilities include covering in‑patient paediatric admissions and all paediatric emergencies during regular working hours, attending morning and evening handover, and cancelling clinics during the Duty Paediatrician week to provide full ward/emergency cover.

Additional duties:

* Operates the Paediatric consultant of the week rota for the Children’s wards.
* Responsible for all in‑patient paediatric admissions during the week and for all paediatric emergencies during regular working hours.
* Shared out‑of‑hours call with consultant colleagues; attendance at handover expected.
* Participates in a shared rota covering the Paediatric Assessment Unit 09:00‑17:30, 5 days a week.
* Collaborates with consultant colleagues in clinical governance arrangements for the NICU, general paediatrics, safeguarding and areas of special interest.
* Has scope for dedicated time in the job plan to enhance and develop sub‑speciality service delivery alongside the transformation programme.


Timetable

* Ward rounds – Monday to Friday, commencing 09:00 during Duty week.
* Handovers – 09:00‑09:30 in NICU; 17:00‑17:30 evening handover. LNU consultant attends both handovers.
* PAU week: 09:00‑17:30, 4 weeks a year.
* Duty Paediatric shift: 5.2 weeks a year.
* On‑calls: 1 in 10, with supplement.
* Outpatient clinics: approximately 23 per week.
* Admin: 1‑1.25 hours.
* SPA: 1.5 hours.
* DCC: 8.5 hours; SPA: 1.5 hours.


On‑call

Weekend on‑call: Paediatric consultant takes over from Friday 13:30, continues over the weekend until Monday 09:00. Consultant is onsite for ward rounds, resident support 09:00‑17:00 Saturday/Sunday, non‑resident outside these times. During the working week, the on‑call consultant is resident till 22:00 and non‑resident till the following morning 09:00.


Teaching / Research & Audit

The Trust recognises the importance of continuing medical education. Protected teaching is provided on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday lunchtimes. A regular teaching programme including induction for junior doctors is in operation. Final year medical students are allocated to the Department from Leicester University for their training. Regular supervision and workplace‑based assessments for junior doctors are in place.

Research and audit are supported by an active Quality Governance Unit. The department actively supports research and has been part of numerous neonatal and paediatric multi‑centred studies.


Mentoring

Mentoring is available for all new consultant staff; it is designed to help and assist new appointees settle into working at Kettering General Hospital as easily as possible.


Governance

The Department holds monthly Paediatric directorate and Consultant meetings; monthly CYPGovernance meetings and regular departmental M&M meetings and ‘lessons learned’ forums. A robust system for incident reporting is in place; all consultants are expected to investigate Datix incidents and complaints where appropriate.


Person Specification


Education, training & Qualifications (Essential)

* Full registration with GMC and Licence to Practice
* Specialist Interest & experience in UK Paediatric Diabetes SPIN/ Endocrinology
* Current certification APLS and NLS
* Level 3 safeguarding training
* At least 6 months tertiary neonatal experience at middle grade level


Desirable

* Management experience
* MRCPCH or equivalent CCT in paediatrics (or within 6 months of interview) or equivalent


Knowledge & Experience (Essential)

* Effective participation in clinical audit
* Experience of postgraduate and undergraduate teaching and training at an appropriate level


Desirable

* Specialist interest to complement those of other consultants in the department
* Publications in recognised journals


Skills (Essential)

* Good organisational skills
* Experience of management/leadership including service improvement
* Works well within a multidisciplinary environment
* Effective communication skills
