About the role
We are seeking an experienced Principal Fire Engineer to join a growing team based in Rainham, London. This Principal Fire Engineer position offers the opportunity to lead the application of advanced fire engineering principles across complex buildings and challenging fire scenarios while developing specialist expertise in UK fire safety legislation, Approved Documents and British Standards.
As a Principal Fire Engineer, you will play a key leadership role in delivering high quality fire strategies across a national portfolio of projects. This role is ideal for a Principal Fire Engineer who enjoys technical problem solving, mentoring others and influencing project outcomes through clear communication with stakeholders and regulators. The successful Principal Fire Engineer will also have the opportunity to support the growth of a developing team and contribute to technical excellence across the wider function.
Key responsibilities
• Apply advanced fire engineering principles to challenging building designs and fire scenarios
• Maintain strong working knowledge of UK fire safety legislation, Approved Documents, British Standards and emerging guidance
• Develop and deliver compliant and proportionate fire strategies aligned with project requirements
• Solve complex fire safety challenges including means of escape, compartmentation, façade systems and occupancy risks
• Lead national fire engineering delivery across multiple projects, ensuring consistent technical quality
• Mentor and support surveyors and junior fire engineers to encourage professional development
• Communicate complex fire engineering concepts clearly to clients, regulators and internal teams
• Build effective working relationships with Building Control bodies and Fire Authorities
• Uphold high ethical, professional and safety standards across all project activity
• Support internal training, CPD activity and knowledge sharing initiatives as a senior Principal Fire Engineer
Skills and experience required
Essential
• Accredited degree in Fire Engineering or a cognate discipline such as BEng or MEng
• Full professional membership of the Institution of Fire Engineers such as MIFireE or equivalent
• Minimum of 10 years post graduate experience working as a Fire Engineer
• Demonstrable experience delivering fire strategies for complex and higher risk buildings
• Experience working across multiple sites nationally with regular travel as required
Desirable
• Experience leading teams or supporting the development of junior fire engineering professionals
• Experience engaging directly with regulators and approval authorities on complex fire engineering matters
