The Met

We are looking to recruit students for a 52-week placement with the Met. All roles will give students valuable insight and experience of working for one of the largest public organisations in the UK and the largest single employer in London. We seek to provide valuable practical experience wherever our students work.
Background
Performance & Insight is a function within the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) that has been created to deliver analytical support to enable the organisation to manage its performance. Through the New Met for London plan the team will look to deliver data-driven decision making to enable more trust, less crime and high standards. This means treating our data in the same way we treat our people, methods and technology; as a strategic asset.
The Performance & Insight function covers the following areas:
* Basic Command Unit (local borough level) analytical support,
* Public Protection (adult and child safeguarding) analytical support,
* Specialist Crime (serious crime e.g. homicide, gun crime) analytical support,
* Demand (forecasting incoming and emerging demand) analytical support.
The role
Candidates must be undergraduate students in a sandwich year course returning to study in Autumn 2027.
The Role:
As a Performance Analyst in the Performance & Insight team, you will work with a range of stakeholders (ranks of Superintendent and above and police staff equivalents) and supported by your Lead Analyst to deliver evidence based, high quality, and insightful analysis to support the delivery of MPS objectives. It includes using analytical findings to spot trends, forecast future implications and highlight areas of good or poor performance. You'll look to enable and support data-driven decision making across the MPS.
Performance Analysts help enable the effective delivery of a Performance & Insight, which will recognise emerging risks, steer organisational direction, inform decision making at all levels and provide assurance.
You will be responsible for:
* Undertaking analysis; this will include analysing diverse datasets to make best use of the evidence base and produce high quality analytical products. This may include:
* Produce high quality analytical products that clearly communicate insights in a meaningful way for the intended customer using a range of presentational styles,
* Engaging effectively with stakeholders across the organisation, facilitating performance related discussions and meetings to support informed decision making related discussions and meetings to support informed decision making‑related discussions and meetings to support informed decision‑making
* Support the development of analytical processes, tools and techniques to ensure the production of insightful products that enable decision making, learning and provide assurance,
* Supporting the approach to evidence based policing, which will help to shape how policing in London should operate in the future,
* Ability to balance and manage competing priorities,
* Undertake ad hoc reporting.
Education/Experience:
* GSCE level or equivalent qualification in both Mathematics (Grade 6 (B) is required for this role) and English (Grade 5 (C) is required for this role).
* Computer literacy, particularly to have skills in Office 365 Excel at Intermediate level, PowerPoint, Word with the relevant presentational skills alongside.
* We require applicants to good knowledge of SQL and willingness to develop further in this.

* Excellent communication skills, including presentation skills both verbal and written.
* Ability to build effective working relationships with colleagues and peers internally and externally.
* Welcoming and confident personality.
* Flexible approach to work with ability to work unsupervised and independently.
* Be self-motivated and have the willingness to learn and develop in the role.
We are looking for individuals undertaking a BSc, with one or more module of their degree covering at least one of the following, Data Science, Data Analytics, Statistics, Mathematics, Criminology or Psychology.
