Job Description Summary
Helps specify new and/or improved materials which are used to develop most new or improved products. Materials are derived from metals, ceramics, plastics, semiconductors and composites that meet certain mechanical, electrical, and chemical requirements. Helps research properties of materials and new ways to combine them; tests and analyzes materials under different conditions, and investigates reasons for component or structural failures. Helps develop prototypes for new products and product components using new or improved materials. Helps design and develop new or improved product manufacturing processes that use new materials.
Job Description
* Gains knowledge and skill in dealing with the company’s products, the materials in them, and how they are processed throughout the value chain.
* Gains knowledge and skill in materials testing and analysis techniques; gains knowledge in the product development process.
* Assists in the review of new product plans and make recommendations for material selection based on design objectives, such as strength, weight, heat resistance, electrical conductivity, and cost.
* Analyzes product failure data and laboratory test results to determine causes of problems and develop solutions.
* Monitors material performance and evaluate material deterioration.
* Modifies properties of metal alloys, using thermal and mechanical treatments.
* Replicates the characteristics of materials and their components with computers.
* Interprets material analysis results to understand the effects of material processing in order to ensure product conformity.
* All other duties as assigned.
